I like the modern Pelikan I've got, the old Sheaffers and modern Pilots and Platinums and Kawecos and Lamys, the Edison and the old Wahl Eversharps, the Mabie Todd, and the Twsbis.

Not so sure about some of the Noodler's and assorted (really cheap) Indian pens.

Ink transmission systems that work well and reliably are pretty much good enough for me.

I have 3 Pels and 3 MBs. I use the MBs much more than I do the Pels. The prettiest pen I own is the M400 White Tortoise, though. I love them both and get a lot of fun out of both as well. I should use my Pels more. They have less ink capacity but that means I get to change colors more often.

Neither, I love my...well, let's say Pilots. There are a couple of other brands represented among my favorite individual pens, but the Pilots have them outnumbered.

I have two Montblancs, both of them the rather atypical Noblesse model from the late 1970s. One, with a reground medium nib, is up there among my favorites. The other is okay. My Pelikans are an M205 and M200, both of them perfectly good pens, but not among the best. And I have a vintage 140 out for repair. We'll see how that goes.

The prices of the higher end new Pelikans and all new Montblancs are out of the range that I'd even consider for a single pen. That's another topic. But Pilot has ones that write as well as I could hope for at prices that I will pay. I have two Custom Heritage 92s, one Custom Heritage 91, a couple of Vanishing Points, and a Falcon. And the Custom 74 probably would be a favorite, except that I bought one with a broad nib, and discovered that it's broader than I typically want.

Of course, for the combined price of all those Pilot models I could have a pretty decent Montblanc or two fairly high end Pelikans, but that's another topic too. B) And I'd still rather have the Pilots.

They make some great "cheap" pens, too. Petit1, Varsity, FP-78G. Okay, the Metro is a bit of a misstep as far as I'm concerned, but nobody's perfect.

I love Mont Blanc Nibs but when price is factored in Sailor (especially when ordered from Japan) is just downright hard to beat. I love the feedback yet smoothness of their nibs. Similarly to the way I'd describe a mont blanc

"There are two kinds of people in the world: Those who believe there are two kinds of people in the world and those who don't." (Robert Benchley)

My Montblanc Starwalker (which thankfully was carefully chosen for me as a present, as I might never have chosen it myself) has shaped up as one of my favorite pens. Then again, my mid-80's Pelikan M400 is another favorite. On the third hand, my Sheaffer Snorkel Saratoga continues to easily hold its own against all comers.

I`m a Vintage Pen Person & although I like my few Montblancs & Pelikans, when it comes to contemporary pens, for me, SAILOR has more to offer than MB + Pelikan combined :P

I agree with jar. There are many more than two kinds of people in this world.

Having said that, I like both Montblanc and Pelikans, as well as many other brands (or, at least, several), but my favorite is Nakaya.

There are two kinds of people in this world:

  • Those who divide everyone into two kinds of people
  • Those who don't.

FACT!

A statement like this with a 3 choices answer is *probably* not to be considered as such a strong statement... ;-)

I prefer yellow, and the answer is 42 (or is it 43??)

Montblanc 1 / Pelikan 0

I only own the one Montblanc, a black 80's 144 BB, & it was purely a chase the nib thing. That it was a Montblanc was secondary to the beautiful nib it was sporting &, given the price of even second hand Montblancs, I have no plans in the immediate future to add any more to the collection hoard.

Had that been a bird with a stub that caught my eye, the score may have been reversed.but not too much beyond the coffee & cream M200 do much for me design wise.

While I really love my Pelikans (and piston fillers are my favorite system), I'm a Parker girl at heart.

If there wasn't the "neither" option, though, it would definitely be Pelikan over Montblanc, hands down.

The one on the right is a Pelikan M30, c. 1965. BB, enough spring to make you think of semi-flex in a weak moment, and... well, no one thinks they have to ask for loads of money for 'em. It's not quite as knee weakening as the 1950s Wyvern with a rather noodly 1mm stub, but it's also not made of casein so it gets to go outside and play more often.

It's mainly pens, just now....

I have couple montblanc and pelikan pens, but they aren't the only ones in my collection. I love italians and maybe japanese ones as well -it's just way too many to choose only one brand

That's what I'm talking about. Not a big fan of the semi hooded, but that's a nice one. There's a P1 with a stub that keeps popping up. If it's still around come August, I may throw something at it.

If it's not so much it causes a twinge, go for it-- my P1 is a B, and it's quite stubbish without being declared one, and a fantastically smooth writer in the bargain.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
