Japanese Pen Brag Page

I'll be honest about a pet peeve of mine Japan makes good wooden based pens and yet the Miracle Pine tree from the March 11 earth quake was given to MB instead... honestly either Pilot, Sailor and Platinum knows how to make them

Good point,

MP only made 113 pens, with 20% (of profits) of the $5000 tab going to local causes in way of donations. (20% was set by precedent from previous charity pens) (exact amount of donation not disclosed)

I couldn't find out if they bought the wood of if it was given in exchange for the donations.

We should stay hopeful, MB couldn't of used up much wood to make 113 pens!

There might still be some wood left for the Land of the rising sun.

That is a seriously beautiful looking pen there. Is it heavy? It looks like it would feel delightful. Also, your photography is lovely too.

Delightful describes it perfectly. I have been using it for a little while now, I would call it a medium weight pen, Mine weighs in a 39 gr (with a full tank)

I usually don't post, but find myself posting this one, and the balance is great.

The Sailor Denshiro has a interesting feature, A screw cap that posts with small spring clips discreetly hidden in the end cap. It clicks in place and feels secure. pulls off with an equally satisfying click.

I love the attention to details.

Very nice, I hadn't seen this one before. How are the snap caps on those Platinums? Is it pretty secure?

Thanks for showing it off for us :)

The pen is 16 years old and it works fine. For the Takashimaya 60th anniversary Platinum did four or five different designs with 120 pens in each design. I don't like snap caps and Platinums are on the tighter side so I feel like a I am wearing it out every time I cap and uncap it. It's not a big deal, the pen is better looking as a result and it seems to me that most of Platinums higher end Maki-e pens are snap caps.

This is the Sailor Chizu Sugi (Japanese Cedar)(Cryptomeria) If I understand it correctly Chizu is a town in the Tottori prefecture, known for its wood working.

It comes in a plain box, made of paulownia wood, with blue velvet liner. It is the most beautiful presentation I have ever seen. Not the most extravagant, Just absolutely beautiful! I love it. The pen is minimalistic and again, just gorgeous.

It is small, 124 mm and 18 grams, 17 mm diameter. I have not been posting to avoid possible stains.

It is a cartridge converter and I like it for this pen. I remove the converter and fill it with a syringe, again to avoid stains.

This one is from the first series, and has minimal rhodium plated metal work. The new model has more at the section to body interface.

Matching rhodium plated nib.

Performance has been perfect.

Truly a precious pen, thank you Sailor.

well the only good part was that the wood was donated to MB... but if it was just a german company Graf von Faber-Castell would have been the better choice since this was just right up their alley I havent seen MB deal with wood before the miracle pine

PS: stop making me look at that Cyprus Sailor... there's still the Briarwood from Platinum, Kaede and Isshi from Pilot

soon-ish... I have the fund but no way of buying it

  • 2 months later...

I,m not big on demonstrators, but the price was too good to pass on.

The nib is the large 21K used on the K.O.P. line, in medium with great flow and smooth as silk. As usual for Sailor, it writes perfectly.

Nib and trim Rhodium plated.

(as you can see) Converter & Cartridge type .5ml capacity

Length capped - 142.5mm / 5.61"

Posted - 161.5 mm / 6.36"

Width (barrel) 15.5 mm / 0.61"

Width widest point 20 mm / 0.787"

36 grams

So in short, a big boy, but being a demonstrator, it doesn't look so big or overwhelming, that is until you put it next to most any other pen.

And here is a beautiful Sailor that belongs to a friend, who was kind enough to let me have it for a photo-session.

It is a Sailor Pro Gear Realo Red and Black Limited Edition of 88 pens, made to celebrate nibs.com.s 20th anniversary.

As you can see it is more a orange then red, and the gold trim just works!.

combining its looks with Sailors piston filler and outstanding writing characteristics, and its just gorgeous!

Thanks Jon,

M

OK, I'm on a roll !!!

Sailor 1911L Black Luster.

Black ion plated trim

21K black ion plated medium nib

Metal weighted section, gives the pen a nice balance

Cartridge / Converter

Capped 138mm

Posted 151mm

Section 9mm

Max 14mm

28 gram

The metal section makes this pen feel grounded, no fatigue writing pleasure.

A classic design with a subdued elegance and outstanding performance.

Having had a wonderful dinner, I've just dipped back into the forum.

I'm hoping that folks have not taken my comment re locking this thread seriously :) .

It was said in jest, and I'd rather it was kept alive particularly as I'm thinking of a getting a Japanese pen - the more I see, the better I know what's available.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
