Mine came after only a 7.5 month wait! Arrived this week.

It is hard to capture in a photo the red urushi seen in the depths of the black urushi in this pen. It's wonderful "in person."

I ended up adding another Kikyo, this time a Portable Writer.

It's interesting how different it is from my other Portable Writer.

The profile is slightly different, weights are different, dimensions different ...

Beautiful pens, jar!

When I got my Portable Writer, I put it next to my Portable Cigar "Owl" and found it about 4 mm shorter and, maybe, somewhat thinner. I thought this was perhaps a Writer vs. Cigar difference in specs, but seeing your two Portable Writers, I guess it's just due to them being individually handmade items.

I am pretty sure the difference is due to them being hand made. If you look at the table you see similar differences between the three Izumos and the two Danitrio Takumi size pens.

  • 1 year later...

Greetings all,

Do we have a "Japanese pen brag page" , like the "What Parker are you using this day?" page or the Pelikan "Whats the most recent addition to the flock?" page.

A interesting brag page is the "Whats the most recent MB purchase?"

These pages allow us to share our enthusiasm, joy and pride with a community that appreciates and supports and even encourages this compulsive behavior.

Pens need not be exotic or expensive, pictures are whatever can be achieves with what at hand.

And the reason I ask......

I just adopted this Sailor Denshiro and wanted to share this beautiful pen with all who love Sailor pens.

The material used for the barrel is wild cherry tree bark, a traditional material used by the Samurai.

This work is only done in one town in Japan, Kakunodate, located in Senboku District, Akita Prefecture.

Few have the skill to preform this work but for 5 generations the Fujiki Denshiro company has been making items from the bark. They made the barrels for Sailor and so proudly, Denshiro is engraved next to Sailor on the cap-band and the pen become its namesake.

What I love about Japanese pens it the harmonious blend between atheistic sensitivity and technical performance. Here we have the traditional craft of the Samurai, with Nobuyoshi Nagahara's masterful nib design, brought together to a balance of beauty and function.

My thanks goes to all the craftsmen for their relentless pursuit of perfection.

That is a seriously beautiful looking pen there. Is it heavy? It looks like it would feel delightful. Also, your photography is lovely too.

I could not agree more,Trust Me, Oneill

I am not familiar with the CH 91, Was that section used on any other pens? could you possibly find a donor pen?

I love this thread, please keep it going and post all of your beautiful pens.

That Sailor cherry bark pen is absolutely gorgeous. Never knew the existence of this pen. My high school-aged son is taking a trip to Japan next year with his Japanese language class ( I wanted to go and his teacher, originally from Japan, was OK with that but my son vetoed the idea - teenagers! ); I now plan to ask him to look for this pen and bring it back to me.

I never knew of the existence of the Pilot Custom Kaede pen until reading about it and saw its beautiful photos on this forum. It is now one of my favorite pens. Acquiring that beauty started me off on a wood pen theme. I now also have a handsome Pilot Cherry Wood VP (which is not actually cherry but stained beech I believe).

In addition to that Sailor cherry bark, I also plan as funds allow, to get a Platinum 3776 Briarwood and a Pilot Cedar wood.

Long time lurker. Newly acquired Kamakura Bori w/ #60 nib.

That’s a beauty. Can you explain or describe how the finish is achieved? Is it textured and 3d or does it just look that way in the photos?

I am so glad to get the "Night scene of pavilion", since it was out of edition in 2008.

The pen is lacquered and then hand carved so the surface is textured.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
