Well, I think I got 23 brands out of 30 pens, not counting repeats and unknowns. I needed to do some cheating to get the line-ups looking right.

There were a lot of German pen manufacturers who did seem to offer the Little Black Dress as a required alternative.

My IDs may be off and time periods may be inaccurate (Ibis, Rappen). Also I have cheated the heights, particularly with the three Pelikan sisters in the middle. In the Hollywood of old, if an actor in a two shot was shorter than his leading lady, the director would call "Hit him with a half-apple". The apple box was the equalizer and came in two sizes. I have used both sizes for the Pelikans.

My thanks to Christof for setting me straight on style and the use of black. This has been a project strictly for my own amusement and has little or no accuracy for the true pen collector.

2. Wartime unknown found in suitcase"""".....I have one of them, and it has the sharpest chasing of any of my pens.

I have both a wartime Reform and Centa, (made by Reform.) very solid pens. No cap ring, just a pressing with sort of little xxxx's.

I got a few others too.....at least half of mine or so it feels are black and gold.

When I said no more black and gold....half what I did buy afterwards were black and gold.

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

Yes, there is an appeal to the black and gold in the classic shapes!

Speaking of classics, if you are anywhere near these cities ... Max Rabbe / Palast Orchester

They are pretty big in Germany for the last 4-5 years. Doing the 1920's German cabaret style. I see them on German TV twice a year. My wife drew my attention to them.

They also had a time when as a group of 6 or so, they did it with only voice. Also quite good.

Yes,I believe they took the Comedian Harmonists as a model

Just a still picture, but a comparison of cacti!

Here is a live performance

The bio movie is quite good as is this book:

The Comedian Harmonists: The Last Great Jewish Performers in Nazi Germany Paperback – October 13, 2010
TMI, I know.! But the comparisons between the groups is quite interesting. There is a group using the name and arrangements and appearing on occasion with Andre Rieu
OK, I know I am usurping my own post, but just one more fahren:
Comedian Harmonists
From the movie Die Drei von der Tankstelle 1930 apparently with the actors, but I wonder if it was dubbed
More production data at the youtube site.
Here they are in the movie as The Singing Cooks

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
