Parker Penman Sapphire Blue

It seems many people are crazy about Parker Penman inks. I can't help but wonder whether it's really about their quality and unique writing experience or the fact they're no longer produced? Anyway Sapphire Blue, Emerald Green, Mocha Brown, Black, Ruby were discontinued in 2000.

Leighton Davies-Smith, an ink chemist with Parker, said the ink took more than two years to develop. Parker was aiming at producing an ink that would be quick drying on paper but slow drying on the nib to enhance a smooth writing experience. The bottled ink came from England and the cartridges came from France. The distinctive ink bottles were designed by Lansdown Conquest, design agency based in London.

Many of the pen discussion boards had strong feelings expressed about this ink. Comments range from staining, clogging to just perfect! I was curious about it. I've received Sapphire Blue sample from candian ninkja - Cyber6. Thank you C.

My impressions? Color is deep and writing expeirence is smooth. I haven't observed any clogging but bare in mind I just had small sample that I used in Kaweco Sport Classic turned into eyedropper.

Would I pay ridiculous money Penman bottles cost on auctions? Never :) I just wish Newell Rubbermaid was more open to pen/onk entusiasts and offered some Penman LE series. It seems however they rather plan on cutting inks line. During Pen Show in Poland one of retailers said that most of Waterman inks will be discontinued and they\ll be offered in three colors. Guess which? The same as Parker. So basically it seems thay'll offer the same product under two names and with slightly different price tag. A pity.

Let's take a look at Penamn Sapphire. And I'll have some good news for you.

Good news - there's almost a perfect match for Penman Sapphire on the market. Please check Azure 5 by Konrad (KWZI):

Excellent review, Vis. Even though this is a very nice deep blue, like you I would never spend the huge amount of money some of those EBay sellers are asking. The fact that KWZI Azure #5 is such a good match will make a lot of folks happy.

That is good news - about KWZI Blue #5.

A friend gave me a few PPS cartridges. The ink had evaporated somewhat, so the cartridges were about half-full. I remember being not so crazy about this ink years ago, but adding water the fill a cartridge gave me a very nice shade. I used about 3/4 of it and topped it off with water again and got a very pretty lighter blue. I ended up emptying the other cartridges in a small vial and adding water (about half-and-half) and will use it once I've used up the Platinum Blue-Black currently in rotation.

Thank you for this review.

Parker Penman Sapphire is a beautiful ink that should be on every FP user's bucket list.

Damn.. I don't have Azure 5 ... :( ...

Awesome review of a BEAUTIFUL ink... I got lucky.... a good friend found an old store with a full box of Penman Sapphire left ... He bought them all and sold them at a down to earth price to the FPN community. I do love the color and sheen.. and don't really have any problems on my broad wet pens. Now.. I need to fix that about not having Azure 5.. :D

The color, as I see it in the samples, strikes a beautiful balance between saturated and subdued. And, it's nice to have the Azure 5 a substitute; if I like it, I want to be able to buy it again!

So, what you're saying is that I have to make sure I get in on the KWZI ink Group Buy #4.... I ALREADY have Honey and GreyPlum on my short list.... Now, apparently, I need to add Azure #5....

I really must STOP reading ink reviews.... :headsmack:

I second Ruth's comment about the dangers of reading ink reviews. It is undeniably a fine blue but I don't think that it would tempt me to break the bank! Thanks for a great review.

Nooooooooo! No more South Seas Blue? (or whatever the new name is) I know a lot of people think the Waterman inks are boring, but SSB is wonderful. Sorry, I guess I hijacked, but that bit got my attention.

Thank you for a great review of an ink I've always wanted to try! Now I feel like I've tried it :) It's beautiful but the ink has a little more green in the blue mix than I like, so I can finally check it off my list!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
