Best Replacement For Nikon Coolpix 995?

Recommended Posts

I bought a Nikon Coolpix 995 in 2001 and it has served me well. Even after 14 years of taking watch and pen photos, about all I can do is put it on a tripod, point and shoot. I have no knowledge of settings and don't use any post processing. Still, the pictures are pretty good - at least, good enough for my purposes.

I have tried to use macro settings on slightly newer small pocket sized cameras like Sony DSC S90 and Canon SD850 but can't seem to get them to focus properly. My Nikon almost always gives me a good shot first time every time.

The camera seems to be misbehaving and I think maybe it is time for a replacement. So what's a good choice for a total simpleton like me? What has given you good results for pen photography?

For my pen pics, I still am using an old timer too, a Nikon D80 with a manual micro nikkor 55mm.

But I also have a compact Sony DSC RX-100 which I can higly recommend. Sometimes, it's used for pen pics too:

B&H Photo has this for $70, used but the page says:

Nikon Normal Macro 55mm f/3.5 Micro Nikkor Manual Focus Lens (Non-AI, NOT for Digital)

Comment?

Baptiste knew how to make a short job long

For love of it. And yet not waste time either.

Absolutely correct. BUT, if you don't use any autmatical mode* (as I don't for my pen pics), it works perfectly.

But wait, my advice was NOT to get a Nikon D80 with a manual micro nikkor, I highly recommended the SONY DSsC RX-100 in my post!

I already have a Nikon D70. I am trying to find the best solution using it. I have an Olympus OM1 with a macro lens, and I may just try a roll of slides and convert to digital from them.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
