Please Help Me Date This Montblanc

This pen was part of a bulk purchase I made a few weeks ago. This is the first time I have ever come across a vintage Montblanc. The pen is constructed of black hard rubber, is a lever fill and is labelled MontBlanc on the Cap. The body is labelled Sim Plo Original along with a symbol and near the tail end of the barrel there is a number and letter code 4BB. The nib is stamped Simplo 4.

There seems to be quite a lot of information pertaining to the vintage MB twist fillers bur very little about lever fillers. I will appreciate any information you can give me about this pen.

Wow, I wish I could help you date it, but I think you've got a really nice pen there. Maybe there's a sample of this pen (or a similar one) in Collectible Stars?

Montblanc lever fillers were produced between 1921 & 1929 according to Rösler. The nib with the SIPMLO & TRADEMARK imprints dates between 1919 & 1925. But the real key is the lever. The lever with the MB star and no "MONT-BLANC" imprint narrows it down to 1922-1924.

Hard times don't last, but hard people do.

Thank a Veteran.

I'm sorry it has taken me this long to get back to the board. Thanks to all for your help.

Speaking of, this is what's on his (Rösler) collectors guide, I had tried to look for lever fillers with a straight section but didn't find any on the web, and acb's reply today remind me i got the book last week, look at #7, lever filler with a straight section, it says No.1 grande, his might not be a grande or with the unusual clip, but it certainly looks a lot like it

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
