I have both and love both of them. My Rose Gold was one sold by Pendleton Brown, so it has a special nib. So far, no plating loss (I've had it more than a year). The purple is beautiful. They are both the same pen, so it's just a matter of aesthetics whether you go for one or the other.

Algester: Thank for the reply. Why does the piston need special grease?

cleosmama: I really like both! Difficult to decide which one to buy.

Thanks in advance.

I have the rosegold with a tomahawk nib mod. If rosegold wasn't an option, I would have gone with purple. I may still get a purple for my wife and "borrow" it indefinately.

Can't tell you why the piston needs a 'special grease', but TWBI took the (for them) unusual step of posting something on their website to advise that this was a problem: http://www.twsbi.com/blogs/news/16729743-twsbi-diamond-580al-update

I think I heard of a few people having problems with their aluminium piston parts seizing up when they'd been cleaned/degreased - and for whatever reason, it appears the mechanism requires something OTHER than the normal silicone grease.

FWIW, you'll find threads in this sub-forum about problems with the rose-gold plating flaking off: this appears to have been a problem with some of the original production, but has been fixed - and as per usual, those experiencing the problem received a free replacement.

Does that help you decide which pen to buy? Probably not! I haven't yet seen a coloured 580 (or 580 AL) that's been tempting to me - actually, that's not true, I bought a 580 ROC (tri-colour) just recently. But the red and green plastic versions, and the orange and purple AL? I'd probably lean towards the rose gold if those were my options - but that's a matter of personal preference...

Some metals tend to gall. Aluminum is well known for this. Lubrication can prevent this. Here is a Wikipedia link:

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

one thing is certain if you degreased your AL piston mechanism you need lithium grease as the lubricant silicon doesnt do well in this instance unless someone can verify that the solid form of silicon grease does indeed work

however silicon grease works fine on the piston seal for the AL TWSBI SEAL ONLY

Thank you for all the replies.

You gave me lots of info, I will take your advice into account. I still can not decide which one to buy, and now the discussion about special grease does not make the decision easier. :)

Thanks.

I don't worry about the special grease. When I clean my pen I don't disturb the grease as supplied from the factory. Ink never gets back there anyway. No big deal. Just don't wipe it off. TWSBI has great customer service. If you have a problem with it, I'm sure they'll take care of you.

You only need to replace the special grease if you wipe it off on the first place. The advice on the TWSBI website is (1) that it's unnecessary to clean the piston assembly when changing inks, and (2) that you should avoid wiping the special grease off if you DO decide to disassemble the piston assembly. As long as you pay attention to that advice, it's unlikely you'll have a problem with the AL pens...

And if it is just ordinary lithium based grease that product is (at least, used to be) available in small tubes at hardware stores.

I would just buy both and be done with it. :) If you want / need to, you can always sell one of them later.

A vote for rose gold from me, only because the purple isn't purple enough its more lilac.

I have it in orange and love it :) - the ink reservoir is huge!

Thanks for the replies. You have been very helpful.

I decided to buy both. :)

About the grease-issue and the rose-gold plating flaking off-issue, I have read about that TWSBI has great customer service, so I hope they will help me the day I encounter problems with the pens. As they wrote on their website: "We back our products and customers 100 percent." :)

I really hope I can avoid those issues.

Thanks for all the helps.

The rose gold flaked off mine and they replaced the nib (very quickly).

alc3261: Did you buy the pen in the beginning when the pen was launched or recently?

Thanks in advance.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
