+1 for Diamine Oxblood. Diamine Red Dragon (swab pictured) is another dark red I like.

Forgot to mention Cult Pens Deep Dark Red. Made by Diamine exclusively for Cult Pens...a UK based retailer. Despite the fact that they're across the pond, they ship rapidly, have fair prices and are a great company to deal with. Sample below taken off their website.

True, but consider that the OP lives in South Africa. His only real availability would be Montblanc ink, current available range at the boutiques, or buying from the Internet. It is a quest to be a Fountain Pen Writer for us here in the Dark Continent- pun intended.

Another Oxblood recommendation. One of my favorite inks, and the only red that I use. I can't see it being replaced.

Fountain pens forever and forever a hundred years fountain pens, all day long forever, forever a hundred times, over and over Fountain Pen Network Adventures dot com!

I see UK, Singapore & Indiana. Did you say Florida?

Yes I did see a listing for a seller from Florida. It is item # 271879910940 & priced @ $63.95 which could be why it is still listed for sale currently? It seems a lot of money to me. The seller is located in Hollywood, FL & also has a listing for MB Winter Glow @ $36.95. I am not sure that I couldn't be pretty happy with it & almost 1/2 price of the Hitchcock. But red's are not really my "love" & with Corn Poppy I am not sure I need another. AND I cannot answer why I feel the need for more than a dozen oranges & browns with twice that many greens!

Along with Oxblood and Red Dragon (I would NOT recommend Deep Dark Red --it comes out brown, brown brown), I would recommend a couple of de Atramentis inks: Orchids, Tulips, and Patchouli.

If you dislike scented inks, Private Reserve has a Vampire Red that looks exactly like dried blood.

Also, KWZ maroon is a very fine, but dry ink.

As you may have guessed, dark red is one of my passions! :)

I'm currently using Red Dragon for grading - and when it dries, it definitely looks like blood.

I have to disagree with post #17: Deep Dark Red doesn't come out "brown, brown, brown" for me. But as usual, individual experiences with inks vary, and you might indeed find it too brown for your own specific needs. As I'm sure you know, all ink recommendations need to be taken with the proverbial, pinch of salt 😊

True, each individual experience is different. I must have gotten a brown batch of Deep Dark Red because this is how it comes out of the bottle for me. The top lines are with a dip nib, and below is a Q-Tip swab wash.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
