Sealing Leaky Section/nib Connection?

coriander

Recommended Posts

Hi all!

I got this pen in the mail a few days ago, and was SUPER DUPER pumped to write with it, but, well.

I think the picture speaks for itself.

(In case that's not clear, there's a gap between the top of the nib and what I think is the feed section that leaks quite a bit.)

Anyone have any idea on how to fix this?

(It's a cheap pen, so it's not the end of the world if it looks ugly, as only as it is sealed.)

Thanks in advance!

My first impression when looking at the picture is that this may not be the original correct nib for the pen. This could be a "bunch of parts" that someone jammed together just for sale, and it may never fit well enough to work.

Just a quick observation, which may be totally off-base.

Have you tried to dis-assemble the nib and feed? That might show more detail and enlighten us as to whether the parts should fit and work.

I have not, as this is only my second FP ever, and I have no idea how one would go about doing so. Are there any good resources out there that you could point me towards?

As it's a cheap pen, it would probably not be worth fixing, even if it could be fixed. I'd send it back to the seller.

These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives everything its value.--Thomas Paine, "The American Crisis", 1776

If you're "SUPER DUPER pumped" to write with a fountain pen, you'll find there are a great many excellent pens available in the sub-$25 price range that will give you an excellent writing experience and feel as if they cost much more. One I especially like is this one:

It's available in a variety of point sizes and the transparent material makes it that much more fun.

I recently received one of the Nemosine pens as a gift and it is indeed a nice writer. And the price on Robert111's link is certainly right as well.

Update re: this

Took out the nib and feed, turned it 45* in the grip, there is no longer a gap! Turns out the leak was coming from the grip itself instead haha.

While I appreciate both of your inputs, that is literally not what I am asking at all. The whole reason I was trying to fix this pen was because it's a cheap pen, so I wouldn't feel too bad if I utterly wrecked it.

(Thank you for that link, by the way. I'm probably going to buy myself one of those once the USD-CAD exchange rate is a bit closer.)

Glad you got this sorted. It's always a good idea to do your repair practise on cheap pens.

I understand, I guess. Fair to say you like to fix things?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
