Sepia - De Atramentis

Recommended Posts

De Atramentis is german manufacturer of calligraphy and writing ink. The inks are hand made (the entire production process is done manually in their manufacturing center) by i's founder - Dr. Franz-Josef Jensen. I believe he uses high quality dyes from well established European companies like BASF and Bayer.

De Atramentis offers a variety of "traditional" fountain pen inks and a broad selection of special and scented inks. I believe they should get more attention as the quality od these fluids is mostly good and some colors are simply stunning.

Sepiabraun is decent ink but it's too red to my taste.

Looks a lot like DA Ebony to me, maybe a molecule more red in it.

It certainly doesn't strike me as sepia. I have to agree with Morbus that it looks more like aubergine. Excellent review, as usual, Vis.

Great review, thumbs down on that ink though.

Hi,

Thanks for yet another Review. :)

I share your personal opinion as to the colour, and I don't see it as a Sepia.

It may do well for personal work product, though I would find the rather unique Hue a bit distracting at first, but it is not offensive or 'loud'.

I wonder if a person looking for a Red-Black could consider Sepiabraun as a possible pick? From what I can see on my display, it stays quite warm even when dark (low Value), and the performance envelope seems to allow putting down a fair bit of ink before wooly line / feathering might occur...

Thanks for the review.

I'll pass on this one -- don't like red-browns for the most part. This one can't decide if it's burgundy with brown undertones or brown with burgundy undertones. And not faintly resembling any version of sepia that I've ever seen....

Thanks for the review. You just saved me from buying another bottle of ink that I won't like. I'm not even going to say what it reminds me of.

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

Just saw this review and I really think that this ink looks like an rebranded version of R&K Scabiosa.

Good work btw, thank you.

Well, mine looks like more like yours than the D.A.. I don't know why I see a similarity, in fact it's more on the dusty aspect of the splash.

Otherwise, like the "Sepiabrauwn" Scabiosa is a really good ink, I enjoy it a lot with medium nibs but what strikes me the most is the smell..

It's like the sailor's but a little more acidic, I found it intriguing and lovely.. In fact I think it's my favorite ink smell to date.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
