Pen Rest Craft Project

For no particular reason I've got it in my head that I can have some fun making pen rests. This weekend I picked up some pen blanks and had a go at a few different styles.

Here my weekend's work after rough shaping with a bench grinder and a Dremel. Still have a lot of detail work and sanding to go.

Interesting Kind of funky and cool, how about a picture with some pens on board?

The yellow one is the only one, so far, with the divots to rest the pen. Here's that one holding a TWSBI AL-580.

Those are neat. I do have a couple of technical questions, though:

1) do the ones without the sort of notch work as well ?

2) are the ones with the notches good for all sizes/girths of pens?

How funny! I was just thinking about pen rests!

Here are my questions to you:

Will you be making any that rest 3 pens (lifting the nib end off the surface)?

Will you venture into more subdued, work friendly colors?

They will all eventually have notches, I just haven't gotten there yet on some. And I'll be making sure they will hold stable all the pens that I use (which range from Pelikan M200 to a Jinhao 159) which is a decent range.

As to 3 pen rests, I really haven't given it much thought. I don't like them but I understand that others do. Right now I'm just trying to come up with some unique shapes, and get my technique squared away. I did these with a bench grinder, but that's not helpful for the detail work. When I'm back from vacation in a couple of weeks I'm gonna get a router table attachment for my Dremel which should allow me to make the shapes with more ease (I hope).

Colors? Assuming that this is something that holds my interest, yes I would probably venture into more subdued colors.

oh wow - would you sell one of these?

These, no. But in the near future, yes.

At this point, I'm still figuring out the best way to make these with the small tools I have. These are experimental, and are earmarked for friends and family. But I have an idea for a better way to make them.

Nice idea! It would be fun to have a holder made of matching material to a custom pen!

I'm thinking about a variation in wood. Not quite the same shape or design, but how to make a fairly simple pen holder in wood, the one material I can work in. Hmmm.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
