Hey Everybody

Hello,

I'm AJ from Upstate New York. I really started diving into the fountain pen game about two months ago. I was enthusiastic about nice writing pens in high school and college. I had heard about fountain pens, but incorrectly thought the tech was old and impractical. Two months ago I was browsing the pen section in Walgreens as I do whenever I am in a big-box store and stumbled upon a $3.49 Zebra fountain pen. Picked it up, brought it home and it barely wrote unless dipped in water. I was excited though and went online and started researching good entry level pens. Three days later I had a highlighter yellow Lamy Safari in my hands and fell in love. I have since gotten some good paper and an assortment of inks and dusted off my cursive handwriting skills. My collection now includes:

Lamy Safari

Lamy 2000

Pilot Custom 74 Soft Medium

Pilot Parallel 1.5mm

Kaweco Classic Sport

Noodler's Ahab

Vintage Wahl-Eversharp Skyline with Greg Minuskin flex nib

Wahl-Eversharp Skyline Technik

I am very excited to learn and continue to enjoy these amazing instruments!

..."diving into the fountain pen game...." :lticaptd: :lticaptd:

You are probably the first person ever to refer to this serious sport of loving, enjoying fountain pens as a game. In any case, you have certainly jumped in with both feet on the inexpensive end of the first quarter! I am betting you are going to enjoy what some of us might consider a passion even more in the coming innings once you start reading some tips from the playbooks of others along the way. :W2FPN:

Welcome !

Relax your grip. Extend your fingers. Cradle the fountain pen on your middle finger

and the web of the hand. Steady the pen with your thumb and forefinger. Notice

how easily the ink flows at slightest contact. Don't you wish pens wrote this easily

in school ?

The nibs for your LAMY Safari can be changed in twenty seconds. Try all five.

Write with joy.

Auf freiem Grund mit freiem Volke stehn.
Zum Augenblicke dürft ich sagen:
Verweile doch, du bist so schön !

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
