Thoughts On Noodler's Inks?

The colors I'm interested in are:

  • Tiananmen

Noodler's Blue

Bay State Blue

Cactus Green

Nikita

Noodler's Blue Black

Apache Sunset

Well,Apache Sunset is marvelous. It does shade madly BUT know it's hell to get out of a pen. Hell. Old sack fillers should never see Apache Sunset in them. All other pens are just fine as long as they can be disassembled and washed out separately (like TWSBI).

Noodler's Blue--No particular problems

Bay State Blue-Reputation is far worse than it's reality. I would not mix with other things but it yields just fine to Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. Glorious color.

Those are all I have had to do with from this list, but I have to say that Noodler's is a wonderful ink and I am glad I have as much as I do. Navajo Turquoise is a dream (glorious color and shading), Army Green, El Lawrence, I could go on. It's great stuff!

My main reason for not using BSB has little to do with its staining properties, and a great deal to do with its lack of lightfastness. See this page. Right now the most fugitive ink in my home is the blue found in Papermate InkJoy ballpoints, but Waterman Violet/Purple is next. However, my results are not comparable to Amberlea Davis', as I am in a North Carolina mountain valley and she is in the Nevada desert. And I don't think she had a sample of waterman violet. My current sample was too close to the top of the window, and half of it is in shadow at high noon.

Noodler's Blue is unlike most other blues; conventional blues tend to be royal blues with a bit of purple in them. IMO, Noodler's is a very cyanotic blue.

Thanks for the shout out Arkanabar.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I have loved a number of the Noodler inks, and some I have given away. The "Keepers" for me are Cayenne (mouth-watering dark orange-red), Apache Sunset (exquisite shading and complexity of hue), BSB (yes, it's a fader; yes, it's a stainer --but oh, that color!), Liberty's Elysium (perfect medium royal blue without being boring), and the Burgundy is actually rather nice option among the wine-colored inks.

well, I just placed an order with Mr. Nussbaum...it's a wee bit on the boring side in some respects*, but I need some basics, first...

54th Massachusetts for everyday writing, Belted Kingfisher, same, plus it's a beautiful blue, and Tiananmen because..well..speaks for itself.

Also on the list are Apache Sunset and Nikita and a pile of others, but I wanted to get set up with some bulletproofs, plus at least one read (yes, not bullet proof but there's something about Tiananmen).

I've been on the Inks fence for quite awhile now..I'd say going on 3 years. I really respect what Nathan Tardiff is doing with both the pens and inks he produces. I suspect soon I'll need much more space than just for 3 bottles...

*each of these colors I just got are amazing in their own rite..not boring, but not yet the entire spectrum one would want to write in.

I greatly respect Nathan Tardiff and what he has done to increase our enjoyment of ink, educate us about inks' many properties and his practice of "moral capitalism"...a quality product at a reasonable price. He also manufactures pens with flex properties that most of us (who could never afford a vintage flex) can easily afford. Hell...he gives half of them away with his ink.

My approach...use whatever ink makes you happy and as many here have suggested, practice good pen hygiene.

Yes, nicely-stated, and well-deserved props to Nathan Tardiff...not only puts out great products, but he also puts out a lot of very positive energy as well.

As it has been pointed out, Noodler's inks tend to be all over the place. I sold some off after trying a single fill, others I kept.

Liberty's Elysium ended up being my absolute favorite blue. It's a very reliable professional looking blue ink. I dilute it with about 30% distilled water though.

Thanks for your support of NI. Just one "f" in Tardif though, please. :)

Agreed: LE is one of my favorite blues as well. With just enough brightness and depth of color, it goes far beyond those dull, "school" blue inks. Good stuff!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
