I know that you have many nice pens, Hari. What do you like about the Izumo? I've been thinking about getting one, myself.

It is an elegant pen, despite being so large. Very easy to grip. This pen negates the concept of "large body needs a large nib".

Thanks for the reply. What nib or nibs do you have in your Izumo(s)?

I have used F, M and B. I have sold my F and M nib examples and now have a small set of Izumos with B nibs. I am looking to add more Izumos, let's see how that works out.

Thanks for the reply. Most of my pens are either fine or very fine, or broad or very broad. I also like stubs, italics, etc. For a big pen that will mostly get used at home, I will probably get a Broad Nib. CFP also has Extra Broad Platinum nibs. I may try one of those.

I would love to have a BB on an Izumo. However, I tend to buy from Japan and there only the stock pens are available to me. With CFP, you have the flexibility of choosing non stock nibs as well as expertly executed customisations. I think you will like the Izumo.

Best Wishes, Hari

Thanks again, Hari. I guess that I'll have to figure out how to post photos so that I can share the results with you and everyone else. I really learn a lot from your posts and photos. I greatly respect your wisdom and experience.

Those aren't oversize Japanese pens.

This is an oversize Japanese pen.

The black Ban-ei pen would be one of my favourite OS Japanese pens. In fact, it is about the same size as the MB149, and a bit larger than the red Ban-ei, both urushi on ebonite with Japanese eyedropper filling mechanism.

Those are gorgeous! I hope one day I'll be able to find one for sale. I think it's unlikely though :/

I had to look these up. They are indeed a rare and unique find.

I love my Izumos, but my favorite oversize pen is my Andreas Lambrou LE based on the Sailor KOP--it actually is a little larger than the standard KOP. It has a KOP medium 21k nib that is smooth as silk.

Which one did you get? I recall that he had several colors for sale at the LA Pen Show. The only one I really liked was sold out.

The black Ban-ei is really not that difficult to find, in Japan that is, and you will see one listed on Japan Yahoo occasionally. See if you can get a proxy outfit in your country to bid for you. Best of luck.

I got the Tairiku (continent), the amethyst/mauve color. The finish looks three-dimensional.

Hmm ... that might be worth it. I've committed to buy a fairly special and expensive custom pen recently, so it would have to be a while from now. Thanks for info though! I'll have to look into that.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
