Hi all:

 

After a long search for a darkish red ink, I have decided to try out a 30 ml bottle of Diamine Oxblood. It looks wonderful.

 

I now need to find the perfect blue ink but the sheer volume is CRUSHING so I am asking for a bit of help.

 

Can anyone who has gone thought a number of blue inks and found one they really like make a reccomendation I can follow up on?

 

I tend to use pens that are on the big side and write with medium or broad nibs, mostly steel. Paper is Rhoda but I want to try others. My writing is all print and I take fast notes so i do not forget what clients tell me. (I forget anyway)

 

I would love a very wet and intense blue that jumps off the page. What I want to avoid is the lighter/sky blue type colors that are wonderful but not for me. I do not care about water proof (clients no longer make me cry) and I do not care about dry time. (Under an hour WOULD be nice)

 

Any help appreciated.

PR Electric DC Blue is my favorite dark blue for sure. Liberty's Elysium is an awesome vibrant blue

Take a look a Diamine Asa Blue and Iroshizuku Kon-Peki. A blue I just started using today and like very much is American Blue by Private Reserve.

I like Iroshizuku Asa Gao, Kaweco Royal Blue, Pelikan Royal Blue 4001, and Sailor Jentle Blue-black.

 

My wife's favorite blues are Noodler's Navajo Turquoise and Iroshizuku Kon Peki.

PR Electric DC Blue, Visconti Blue (more medium-dark than dark), Sailor Jentle Blue, and De Atramentis Indigo Blue. And if you buy Diamine Sapphire Blue don't worry, there's nothing wrong with your ink, it just smells that way.

Diamine Sapphire certainly jumps off the page but I find it a little harsh.

 

Asa Blue is not quite so bright but is easy to live with. Someone on FPN described it as a happy colour - very apt.

Private Reserve Midnight Blues (Fast Dry) is dark, interesting and complex. It's a wet ink and although labelled Fast Dry I can only assume that's compared to Diamine Majest Blue.

Diamine Sapphire blue is well worth a go, as is J Herbin's Éclat de Sapphire.

 

Diamine's Velvet blue also looks good on the page.

Look at the caveats for Bay State Blue and find a pen to put it in. I have it in a Pilot Metropolitan and I like it very much. (It's been in there for over a year and with a quick flushing every couple of months I have had no problems.)

 

Looking for a black SJ Transitional Esterbrook Pen. (It's smaller than an sj)

Diamine Majestic Blue.

Parker Quink Blue - who'd a thought? but that is also a very nice dark blue. Do not confuse with Parker Quink WASHABLE blue though.

Most of the blues mentioned above are also awesome. I can't decide between Diamine Sargasso Sea and Majestic, which one I like more. Enjoy!

I'm with the sampler crowd. Look through swabs, read the reviews, then order a few samples to test out. Some people might even offer to send a couple.

 

Diamine China Blue, maybe?

I think Bay State Blue is one everyone should try, at least once. It is a startlingly bright blue. It is hard to live with, very hard, but is a great colour.

 

As for Diamine Sapphire Blue, I like it, but it does seem to feather & bleed a bit on cheaper papers. I don't know what it does on more expensive paper, as I have no experience of that.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
