I rarely write in a journal (yes, I know I need to more), but rather on "legal" pads in leather binders. The ones with the hard cardboard backing? Can any of you recommend a good paper brand that makes this type of pads, that are more suitable for FP writing--as well as a good place to order them from? I've included a couple of pics, to give you an idea of what I'm looking for. The small pad is 5x8 and the large one is 8.5x11.

Thanks, Tony

Rhodia makes great legal style pads, I like the ones with 3 holes already punched in them - and they make nice leather like holders for them too. Office max or staples sugar cane brands are also well regarded here. If you search FPN you will find many previous threads with more suggestions. Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions. I wish we had a Staples in town, but we do have Office Max and Office Depot. I may just look online for Rhodia products. Is their an online vendor that specializes in FP's, ink & paper, that you'd recommend?

Thanks, Tony

I've never had a problem with Goulet Pens.

Carmen, I just placed an order with them. Thanks for the tip.

Tony- check the Office Depot/Office Max in your city, and check if they carry legal pads made by a brand called, Black and Red. The paper is excellent, it worked very well with my pens including with the Pelikan M1000, which writer real wet.

I'll bet you have a Wal-Mart in your area. If you are willing to buy there (I respect the wishes of those who choose not to do so), I've had great results with their OMNI Office pads. I use the graph ruled ones that are narrow-ruled on the reverse side, and the finish is very FP-friendly. The only caveat on these is that if your nib is a wet writer, there will likely be bleed-through. I don't use both sides, though, so I'm fine. And, the price is right -- IIRC, the last few I bought were on sale at less than $2 per pad (80 sheets/pad).

Staples is online. Rhodia products, also look on the 'Bay. They can be found from various places and you can also competitively shop for them.

There are 3 brands of legal pads made from sugar cane that I know of and all are good. Staples and Office Depot make some, links are below. There's a 3rd brand called Canefields available at Amazon. Attached is a link to my review.

Staples:

Office Depot:

My Review of the Canefields pads:

Roaring Spring also makes a sugar cane notebook and this paper is also good, but I don't know of any other brands of legal pads made from sugar cane.

In general, sugar cane paper is quite fountain pen friendly, and sugar cane legal pads are significantly nicer to write on than the paper used to make most legal pads.

I really liked the Virtuo Legal Pads from Office Depot. I haven't used them in about two years. I got *ahem* distracted by other paper products.

They can withstand a surprising amount of ink. I've tried a range of nibs on them and been very pleased. They are only lined on one side though.

My favorites (right up until you see the price) are Docket Diamond. The paper is lined and backed, it looks like a legal pad, but it is stationary quality paper.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Great suggestions folks. I've got some Rhodia pads on the way, but will certainly check into these other possibilities.

Thanks, Tony

I think you will find dickblick.com to be among the lowest prices for Rhodia pads

Edit to add: Whoops saw you already purchased - hope you enjoy!!

Oh wow. They're probably going to be discontinued. That's terrible. They were my first fountain pen friendly legal pad. It does seem that you can still get them online though.

Thanks for the heads up, Chuck!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
