Hello,

 

I have a BCHR ringtop W-E pen. The cap of the pen has two little holes in it, about 1mm diameter, about halfway along the length of the cap. It's like they are vent holes for the cap or something. But won't that let the ink on the nib dry out? Should I plug them?

I believe that these holes are to avoid a vacuum being formed when the cap is pulled off. This would tend to draw ink out of the reservoir and flood the nib or even the inside of the cap.

The cap on a Wahl is unscrewed. The holes are indeed there to release the vacuum. The section gets an airtight seal in the inner cap and the holes give you neutral pressure between the inner cap and the threads of the barrel so that when uncapped the ink doesn't flood the feed as early feeds are a bit underpowered compared with later feeds.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning.
