Why I Hate Mb

Recommended Posts

I was flashing my 600$ MB at the meeting today, like any vain person would, when the piston started to leak... That will teach me the lesson, I'll take my Preppy to the meeting next time

I read in Peter Twydle's book that MB piston has a design flaw that MB is refusing to admit. I wonder if that is on purpose as they can make money out of servicing it...
I have love hate relationship with MB. I hate that they overcharge you, I have Solitaire Doue Steel and for the steel cap they charge you extra 200 pounds... I would be surprised if it cost them more then 20 pounds to actually make it.
And then it is reliability issues. You have to send them for the service regularly to avoid problems and their piston filling system is inferior to Pelikan's.
I hate it because it is a great pen, overpriced on purpose with beautiful finish and nib but not as reliable as you would think and they make it difficult (with all the special tools) to service it yourself.

So you bought something that you thought overpriced with a design flaw that that you knew about and that was unreliable and required regular service from MB so you could "flash it" at meetings.

Hmmmmm?

Surely, somewhere, there are therapists that specialize in MB anger management? I would think that might be a large target market. Or maybe dentists do well in that area, since some of the complaints seem a bit tongue in cheek?

Sorry, but a pen that is not reliable is not a "great pen."

MB is not perfect to everyone. With that said, I am glad I have limited funds or there will be more MB pens in my future. :P

Ummm.

I have not had any issues with my Montblanc Pens. Very reliable, especially when you consider i usually keep it in my front pant pocket.

If you honestly consider all that a Montblanc provides i fail to consider how you can call it overpriced, otherwise you would not FLASH it around at the office.

i personal consider cheap pens to be over priced. it probably only cost about 1/10 of 1 cent to make a cheap pen but it will cost you a buck at the store for a cheap pen and that equals a 1000 percent mark up! At least Montblanc is made in Germany in limited numbers and sold in Boutiques that justify the $500 and up price tag.

Okay, I will admit it, I am not really vain. And more...I was not FLASHING the pen. For all the rhetorically challenged: there is such a thing as self deprecation!

As I said, I HATE MB, but I also love it. I like the finish and the nib is wonderful. Love hate relationships are a mysterious thing...

Is being dismissive of another person really the best you can do? This tells very little about me, and a lot about you.

And I never claimed I am an expert. I only have something like 50 FP which is nothing compared to many people on FPN. I was referring to Peter Twydle's book "fountain pens", in it, he says on Montblanc: "its arrogant refusal to recognise a design fault with their piston-filling mechanism, which even today causes those current models that employ it to overfill and therefore flood".

If you actually read what he wrote it says nothing about a piston leaking. And if you actually read the instructions that come with a Montblanc pen you ill find that they address the issue of overfilling by recommending the user eject three or four drops of ink and then draw the excess ink back from the feed into the body.

RTFM.

Okay, now this I understand! $*#$@#!! Montblancs. I spend an ungodly amount for a Proust, and the damn thing needs a $400+ repair due to its defective design. But what a lovely pen when it's in my hand, and with a great F nib.

I didn't take your OP seriously; I got it. thumb.gif

Why spending hundreds of dollars on an object you hate?

Montblancs have a mythos surrounding them. People who know nothing of fountain pens or even pens in general will readily assume Montblanc to be the best. There may or may not be good reason for that, I am not in a position to argue one way or another, but showing off a Montblanc will certainly leave an impression. I am sure that's often a reason why people buy them.

The piston started to leak? as in the end of the pen, or it leaked from the nib? maybe it has a crack that you haven't noticed before?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
