Sailor (Kingdom Note) Nipponia Nippon (Crested Ibis)

This is Nipponia nippon, from the Kingdom Note bird series.

Nipponia nippon, aka Crested Ibis or Toki, looks like this: (random Google image search)

The ink itself is a gorgeous bright red, with an orange tint.

Writing samples

The ink is wet and smooth. Minimal shading. It's so bright that it pops out the page.

Sheen

You may have seen the crazy golden sheen in the splash. In normal writing (and on ordinary paper) it's less prominent. On non-absorbant onion-skin paper it's gorgeous.

Comparison

With my other reds.

And it's a perfect match for demonstrators:

Now that's one pretty red!

How's staining? Does it stain?

>8[ This is a grumpy. Get it? Grumpy smiley? Huehue >8[

I tend to ramble and write wallotexts. I do that.

I went hunting for this gorgeous ink as soon as I saw this post! But I was not able to find it for less than $40US shipped a bottle and that's so hard to justify. Are these inks limited edition? Is there a better place to buy them or is $40 as good as it gets?

Thanks for another fantastic review.

$40 each is about as good as it gets unless you can buy multiple bottles or buy in person.

That is a nice red. I've been waiting on someone reviewing this so that I could see what it looks like, so thank you. The pic here makes it look very bright - is it as bright in real life?

I do like this one, but I personally prefer Sankodo's Osu red, which is just a tiny bit darker, but that tiny bit gives the ink a real depth that I feel this one lacks. I'm not selling my bottle as samples, but I didn't buy a back up of this one either.

Of course, I don't have onionskin paper. This ink does look LOVELY in your onionskin shots. :)

Other than the gold sheen, this one looks surprisingly one-dimensional (compare to Diamine Poppy Red), like it comprises a single dye. Too bad, because I'd love an alternative to Rouge Hematite, and for a moment, I thought this was it.

You are exactly right! One-dimensional, that's the word I've been looking for to describe this ink.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
