Pilot Iroshizuku Yama Budo Review

Ambrose Bierce

Recommended Posts

When I first got into to fountain pens I watched a lot of Brian Goulet's videos, and because of that the first ink makers I was introduced to were Noodler's and Iroshizuku (that's pretty much all her ever uses in the videos). I really liked some of the offerings from Iroshizuku, but after I discovered the hundreds of other inks out there (which all seemed to be way cheaper), I sort of just threw the brand to the side. None of the colors every really popped to me. The other day, on an impulse buy, I picked up a bottle to see what I was really missing out on. I now understand. I don't love the color of Yama Budo, but if all of the other Iroshizuku inks behave like this then I can't wait to get more! I still don;'t many of the colors very exciting, but I would be willing to sacrifice awesome looking colors for a perfectly preforming ink. Expect to see more Iroshizuku reviews from me soon. On to the pictures!|

Before Yama-budo I thought I'd never own a bottle of magenta ink. It is a great performer, and I do like the color.

If you want the same great performance in an even prettier shade, Sailor's Oku-yama is the one to get.

Such a special ink. This is my only Iroshizuku ink, that I have, but didn't mind to get it. The bottle need to be maintained clean at least the top of it, otherwise the cap can stuck, and can be broken in the attempt of opening.

This is my favorite ink. Bar none. There are some inks I like more for specific writing or qualities of the ink, but the yama-budo is a wonderful all-around ink that highlights the distinctiveness of writing with a fountain pen without being "in-your-face" gaudy.

I filled up a pen with this for the first time in months today, thought a drier writer might bring out the best in it but I still don't get the hype. It always seems darker to me on the page than on the computer screen. It does look lovely in the bottle though.

No, it needs a wet nib and slow to dry paper. When you get it on TR paper, it has an amazing sheen.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I confess I feel the same. I really want to love Yama Budo but I don't. It is way more red in real life (at least to me). I am always expecting and hoping for more pink or purple, and I just can't seem to get the sheen everyone else gets. Maybe my sample is bad or something? I don't know. I was expecting to love it, but I really am disappointed with my personal experience with it.

Try it again in one of those pens I sent you on the paper Halloween sent. You'll be a convert.

A wet nib and 90g Clairefontaine was the problem for me, but I am liking it more with the drier nib. I have also found that it looks much nicer in natural light than artificial. I haven't tried TR paper yet, but I am sure it's just a matter of time!

Okay! I need to finish one of the fills that is almost done, then I will give Yama Budo another try! Maybe that vellum will show me the sheen!

I apologize for the bad photo.

But that SHEEN!!!!!

In an Ahab with a Goulet stub (I can't remember if I it's 1.1 or 1.5 in there right now) and on the Canson Vellum from Herbert.

Yes, I did buy a bottle. I had to.

I was surprised to find a low price on Amazon, and I had a gift card (thank you Bing Rewards!!) so I only paid $15 for my bottle & got free shipping! Hooray!!! :D

I have a bottle of this ink. Has good qualities but I'm not too crazy about the color...

I've yet to experience the sheen many have, but even without it I really like the color.

I had to try it in different pens & nibs and on different papers to find a good match I really like.

But I do like pink-magenta-purple inks and this is in that category.

Try Canson Vellum or Tomoe River! :)

Appears we are communicating with each other on two different threads haha.

I've tried it on tomoe but with a not so wet fine nib. I will be giving it a go with my medium italic when it comes in.

Turned out all I needed was a wider and much wetter nib. Apparently the sheen had always been there on the smaller nibs- I just had to use a loupe to see it. But on the 3.8mm parallel is shows up quite nice.

Do you have something which is oily? I put a tiny bit of silicone grease on the threads of the bottle's threads. I also had the same issue for this my first and second bottle, the first I threw away, almost entirely full bottle (Momiji) by mistake. Silicone grease is used to lubricate, among other parts of a fountain pen, the piston and other uses include used to make some pens eyedroppers. Just a tiny bit will do and then open and close the cap so the substance can get on the threads of the cap also. Then, don't close the cap tightly, but close it normally. This should work.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
