Sailor Pen And Message Cigar Review

I have never been a huge fan of hard to obtain Japanese inks. They all look really pretty, but come at such a steep price tag that I don't find it worth the effort. I was recently asked if I would like to try out one of those hard to obtain inks, and I said sure. When I fist got the ink I was a little scared to see how it would work out. The ink is called cigar, but it looks dark green in the vial. I cut up some paper and got ready to swab up the ink, and lo and behold the ink was dark green. But after a second or two the color began to change into a beautiful khaki color. I was shocked; it was freaking awesome. I immediately filled up my Ahab with this ink to see what writing with it was like, and I was not disappointed. The color isn't quite as khaki out of the pen (and still has some green undertones), but it still looks very pretty. While the color is good, if it were identical to the color of the swab this ink would far and away be my favorite I've tried so far. Sadly the ink doesn't to amazing in a flex pen. It seems to railroad far easier than all others I have tried to this point. Cigar definitely turned me on to more Sailor inks, and hopefully they will all be as good as this one. Now for the review!

Thanks for the great review.

Cigar is a fantastic ink. It is so complex, don't be surprised if you find the color is different yet again when tried in a different pen. This ink is very pen/paper dependent.

I currently have this ink in my super flexy vintage Conklin 25 and it works perfectly even with heavy flexing. Works well for dipping, too, though it's a bit dark. I'd blame your Ahab for the railroading.

IDK I have never had issues with railroading before, but I may have tweaked something on accident. As far as the ink being different depending on paper I highly agree. I was looking at the swab that I had used for the color changing video today, and it looks way more green than the original swab that I provided. Only difference is that one is on Clairefontaine, and the other is on some no-name paper (it is still super FP-Friendly though. I use it in all my reviews). The picture doesn't quite do it justice, but you can see the difference

Now, aren't you glad you're Pink?

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Nice review! This ink really is incredible. The brown/copper sheen is subtle, but present enough to affect the inks color when dried.

So many inks, so little time...

then looks like I have to tweak my ratios for the ink I'm close to getting it and is very easily done with common inks but getting it perfect is also the challenge but it seems my speculations the ink's base looks like Tokiwa-Matsu might be the only lead you guys have :3

this is my recipe it may not look like cigar but it has the same properties as one

Sailor Pen and Message Cigar is my favorite ink, even in a pen that I don't love. I enjoy every chance I get to see it in other people's reviews.

This ink is incredible: so layered and complex, it seems to alter with every use. My Conid Bulkfiller Kingsize demonstrator is inked with it now, even though it is hardly the most inspiring when in liquid form...

Too many pens; too little writing.

My questions: where do I get a bottle? Any suggestions, please?

Might you possibly have a link that is intended for those who do not speak or read Japanese? :)

Halloween, contact cool-japan on eBay. I got my bottle through him.

You won't be sorry. This is an ink that is made for an artist like you. I just wish I had dpritch's handwriting and your artistic skill, and that I didn't have to work so I could spend a lot more time playing with my pens and inks.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
