Sailor Jentle Yama-Dori

The lovely Amberleadavis let me try out this ink recently, even though it has been discontinued by Sailor. It was part of Sailor's Jentle line of inks (Four Seasons), and was known as Yama-Dori. The majority of the line has been discontinued as of today, with only Blue and Blue-black remaining. It is quite a pity.

This review will follow my normal standard format for reviews, with pictures following a small blurb. The pictures were taken with an iPhone 6, back camera, in artificial lighting. Effort has been made to show the true color, but your milage may vary depending on your monitor. If you would like to see all my ink images, you are free to go to

Here is a preview of the ink. The ink is a dark teal color.

The review was done with a Noodler's Konrad Acrylic (Lake Baikal) with a 0.8mm untipped sharp italic that I ground myself. I do a little bit of nib work on the side, so contact me if interested.

The review was written on HP 32lb Premium Laser Paper, which can be found at Staples for the whooping price of $19.99, or on Amazon for $15.39. This is my new "standard" paper I will be using for all my reviews, writing, and comparisons. I still have a bit of HP 28lb, which is now discontinued, but I am going to be moving to this one now, as it is much better, IMO.

Here is the swab of the ink. It was pulled from my latest project, a crowd-sourced ink swab database found here http://inkymadness.tk/. This is my own swab that I am using here, but many other people's swabs of lots of inks can be found there! You are free to contribute your swabs as well by emailing them to me at admin@inkymadness.tk.

The ink is a dark teal color. The ink is quite wet and has a high amount of lubrication, even for a sharp italic. There is definitely some shading, from a medium to a dark hue. On this paper, there is no feathering, spread, show through, or bleed through. The ink performs quite well on poorer quality papers as well. It is highly saturated, and has exhibited a tiny bit of staining along the ink window of the Noodler's Konrad. The staining came off after more use of the pen, and thus is not too big of a problem. There is a high amount of red sheen on this paper, and it is even more pronounced on Tomoe River paper.

Here is a poorly drawn ghost to show how the ink looks with sketching, and coloring. Notice the high amount of sheen there.

The ink takes about 15 seconds to dry, which is roughly the same amount of time as my other inks take.

Here is a water test. The top grid had drops of water placed for 10 seconds, then vigorously wiped downwards. The bottom text did not receive any drops of water and was only wiped with in the same motion as the grid. The ink did not perform very well on this test. There was a lot of lifting on the grid followed by a huge amount of wet smear. The text is barely readable due to the wet smear. Do not use this ink on important documents.

Lastly, here is a scan of the review. Use the scan to read the rest of the review. I did not intend for it to show color accuracy. The pictures are the most accurate representation of the color.

That's all folks! I would give this ink a 8.5/10. If you liked this review, stay tuned for more to come!

I'm sorry to hear it has been discontinued. I purchased a bottle from Jet Pens after getting a letter from an English pen friend. I was very taken with the red sheen. Perhaps they will come out with an ink that has the same characteristics again, one can always hope.

To my knowledge, Yama-dori was a limited edition ink that was reintroduced just last year, when Sailor revamped its line of inks (discontinuing Sky High, Grenade, Epinard, etc, in the process). It's readily available online as of today.

Having said that, although I like the color, Yama-dori has only ever given me issues: it dries out quickly and feels thick and chalky coming out my finer nibs, which is unfortunate. Thanks for the review!

Hmmm. Good to know. Thanks for pointing that out!

Yes, it is readily available now, after being re-introduced last year. I've never had any problems with it.

Yes, now that it's a part of their line up, be sure to get it. This ink is awesome. The only thing you didn't capture is the amazing SHEEN.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I definitely will! For some reason, this paper (which normally shows sheen quite readily) has a hard time with this ink. Don't know why... Also, can you remove that extra picture on the start of the review? It wasn't supposed to be there and I'm embarrassed now.

Agreed. Gave husband one of my pens inked up with Yami-Dori last week since he forgot to refill one of his fountain pens. He then wrote/signed a few mothers' day cards with it, and the first thing I said when he gave me the cards to sign was "Wow, look at that sheen!"

Thanks for the review! Love Yama-Dori, both the color and the sheen.

So many inks, so little time...

After all my dalliances with Sailor inks, this is still in my top five favourite inks ever. <3

I have to ask....

What are the other four?

I do enjoy my bottle of Yama-Dori. The teal is nice and rich and the sheen is so gorgeous!

Yet another great review.

This ink was the gateway "drug/ink" for me into the Sailor inks.

Discontinued? Oh, bother. I absolutely love Yama-Dori -- the shading, the sheen, the quality of the blue-green color. I joked in my review on JetPens that, if I ever heard that Sailor was discontinuing the color, I'd have to take out a loan and buy every bottle I could find. Looks like I may have to make good on that. :(

That was my thought reading through this topic. Perhaps, we'll never know . . . .

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

Thank you for clearing that up again. I'm glad this one is still here, unlike Sky High!

Many thanks for clearing up my confusion. I guess I don't have to get that paper route after all.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
