Pilot Parallel Pen Italic Calligraphy Guidelines

Maurizio

Recommended Posts

I have some nice guidelines for all 4 stock sizes of the Pilot Parallel pens. I don't remember where I got these. I recently searched the net to find the source and couldn't find it. So, I thought I would share these with all of you fellow italic enthusiasts.

Enjoy.

Maurizio, my thanks to you for these.

I purchased a set of the pilot pens recently and have not had a chance to use them. When I do get around to using them, these will be handy.

Thanks. I find the Parallel pens are quite handy for regular practice rather than getting out the dip nibs, ink bottle, rag wipe etc.

Isn't the 'net great? We share stuff and meet people here from around the world.

You should try the 6mm one too. It's a lot of fun and lays down some big fat ink.

Enjoy

I'm planning to practice math calligraphy with the 6mm one, not sure how this works out, any advice? Right now I'm using a Pilot 74 with a C nib, very small comparing to the 6mm Pparallel but it either goes bold or goes home right?

I'm by no means an expert but just a student of calligraphy. I downloaded these nice guidelines from somewhere on the net more than 5 years ago. Out of curiosity for the original source of them, last year I looked and couldn't find it. That's why I decided that I should share them with my fellow fountain pen and calligraphy enthusiasts.

I can't give any advice re math calligraphy other than finding and using a good guide.

2 books I can wholeheartedly recommend for italic calligraphy are:

Calligraphy in 10 Easy Lessons by Eleanor Winters & Laurie Lico (about $10.00 and well worth that price)

Foundations of Calligraphy by Sheila Waters (about $25. - $30.)

If you want to start with only one, I'd recommend the Eleanor Winters book. It is simple and direct.

Sheila Waters' book is also excellent and is more detailed and in-depth.

Enjoy

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
