Copper Orange - Lamy

Lamy doesn't need introduction on this board. However as I enjoy writing introductions, here we go. Lamy was created by Josef Lamy who was a German export and branch manager for Parker until 1930, when Parker left the German market due to unsuccessful sales of its Duofold.

Lamy started his own company by acquiring the pen manufacturer Orthos Füllfederhalter-Fabrik producing celluloid pens. For quite few years they were selling conservative looking pens stylised after Pelinan and Montblanc pens.

However in 1966 they invited industrial designer Gerd A. Müller to create their new flagship product - Lamy 2000, a classic Bauhaus-inspired design that has remained in production ever since 1966 with no significant change. This pen set the tone for all Lamys to come: forward-looking, innovative design, excellent quality and writing performance. Lamy 2000 is one of my all - time favourite pens. With time I even came to like Lamy Al-Star that looked like an ugly duckling for me when I first saw it.

Basically I love their pens. However I wasn't so fond of their inks. They're not bad, they're sold in practical and functional bottle yet the colors really aren't mesmerizing. ANyway the inks are sold in bottle that provides a roll of blotter tape used to clean the pen after filling, or to blot writing. It is specially shaped with a wide neck and a basin to collect ink to aid filling when close to empty.

They can also be purchased in cartridges.

It seems that lately Lamy came to conclusion they can make money on special edition inks that are introduced together with limited edition Al-Stars and Safaris. That's good, especially that new colors (Copper Orange and Neon Lime) stand out from their rather conservative and - let's face it - boring ink line-up.

  1. Black
  2. Blue Washable
  3. Blue / Black
  4. Copper Orange
  5. Green
  6. Neon Lime
  7. Purple
  8. Red
  9. Turquoise

I was send Copper Orange cartridge by a fellow FPNer and I must say it's one of best oranges I've tried. I enoy writing with it a lot. I would buy full bottle if only I could find it in Europe (La Couronne Du Comte, Fontoplumu, Writing Desk have only cartridges).

I'll tell you one thing. The color is fantastic and the ink behaves really well.

I am currently loving the look of orange inks, and this one is now on my list of must-try inks. I am very pleased that you also showed the ink bottle, as sometimes it's not always clear how the bottle is constructed when looking at online photos provided by internet sellers. Thanks!

I do not understand why the manufacturers choose their markets BUT for whatever reason I believe this ink (in bottle) was never distributed in Europe. I know I thought it odd that the pen was introduced in Europe before US but only with the cartridges. A month later when the pen made it's appearance "stateside" the ink was then a bottle option. It felt strange to have the "pen before the ink" (altho I did buy cartridges from the Writing Desk when I ordered the pen) but added a bottle of ink after a month.

It is a very nice "orange" & your review is as always thoroughly enjoyable. Whether bottle or cartridge this ink is a pleasure.

It is indeed a nice orange and I plan to buy a bottle soon. Great review.

I too don't get it. I talked to Lamy in Heidelberg and they said that the present-day orange and pink are at least in all of Europe only available in cartridges. They (in Heidelberg) said that they never heard of those inks in bottles, even if they are in fact available as such in Japan and/or in the U.S..

Brian Goulet said in one of his latest videos that the US distributor said that the ink is no longer being made.

FP shops here (europe) tell me they had no idea there would be a bottled version of the ink. They had some cartridges though.

It's a shame because I really need this. It's important that I get it. I need it for... euh... reasons. >8[

@C - it was denial mechanism. Mentally, I'm not strong eneough to face the fact of existence of this ink. It;s scary :P

About my birthday - the suitable date can be found in my profile. I'll never say never to ink offer :)

More on serious note - you guys surprised me that the bottle is available only outside Europe and that folks in Heidelberg didn't hear about Copper Orange in the bottle (whaaat?!).

@Don Zardeone - the same with me. I have enough oranges but somehow there are some IMPORTANT reasons that this one should also make it to my drawer.

I was trying to wait to buy this, but just the hint that it wasn't being produced any more . . well, a bottle (and the matching pen) is on it's way!

I love your reviews - they are a feast to the eyes.

I just had a chance to doodle with this ink and it is truly wonderful. Lovely color and great shading. It may be bad for my budget because some kind of ink awareness/demon is now stirring in my consciousness. I have a small selection of various respectable blues and purples but something about this ink has inspired me.

Condolences to all who desire bottles. Recently for a lillte while the Lamy website in Germany was offering the Al-Star in the coveted Ruby Red color , available in Germany and Austria ( I think) only. What? How could this be?

All best!

Great. I just bought the pen on a whim, found this thread, and now I'm going to have to go pick up the ink. He had two bottles left. I might pick up both. I have nothing like this in my meager ink selection. (far from a collection)

Thanks, you enablers.

Oh, and nice review as always.

I was waiting for the cartridges to come back into stock at JetPens, and decided to just get a whole bottle from PenChalet instead. So very glad I did. I love how the ink shades, and I love the depth that the almost pink notes lend to the orange. Great, great ink. If they really aren't producing it any more, I may have to get a couple more bottles.

When I heard from Brian Goulet that the ink was no longer going to be made, I picked up a bottle. I had already gotten the Lamy Al Star Copper Orange pen, and was enjoying it. But I am very glad that I picked up the ink. I am not an orange person, but I really love this ink in all of my pens - Lamys, Deltas, Faber Castells, etc. It is one of the most versatile inks I have found.

It is indeed a truely beautiful colour, and a beautiful combo with the All Star it came with.

But since as far as I can tell it is indeed cartridge (Lamy style ) only, I am looking for a good surrogate.

Has anyone been able to see if there is a matching Diamine, Akkerman, Private Reserve?

Based on internet swabs, I tried the Diamine Pumpkin, but that is way lighter in real life.

Thanks!

I really enjoyed this ink, but could only source it in carts here. Then I went and bought Bungbox 'Fresh Oranges'. All other oranges have faded into utter insignificance.

Bungbox? Never heard of that one, but I will see if I can source it in Europe.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
