So...what's Been Going On In Estieland?

I've been on a self-imposed absence from the FPN since Thanksgiving (I think). In that time, I've not purchased any pens and very little ink, though I did watch and bid on a few items on the 'bay recently.

Have I missed anything exciting? What's the word on the brand revival? How y'all been?

The box is really nice and it comes with a pen.

Was this a six-month cleansing ? Were you in rehab ? :lticaptd:

I check one of the new Esterbrooks, the last time I was out.

It is a good pen. No character. I have a score of lever-fill Esterbrooks that I love.

Auf freiem Grund mit freiem Volke stehn.
Zum Augenblicke dürft ich sagen:
Verweile doch, du bist so schön !

I haven't seen one of the new Esterbrooks in real life but from the pictures they appear to be quite ordinary cartridge converter pens that have nothing whatever to do with the historic brand.

Yup, that's the general consensus about them. There was a long thread about them last winter, including Brian Anderson posting a link to his and Lisa's video review.

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

I remember a lengthy thread, but left before the actual release of the pens. They held zero appeal for me, but the drama surrounding the FB page was interesting to read.

No rehab, no incarceration, and no sign of detoxification. After a 14 year hiatus, I finished my degree. Taking the classes online, I knew if I even opened the FPN, I'd get sucked in. But, it's finished now (got the grade for my last course today, as a matter of fact).

Congratulations!

Time to buy yourself a new pen as a reward??

Sorry. Couldn't help myself.

Thanks!

No new pens that appeal at the moment, so I finally bought a DSLR (on sale). Saving up my mileage reimbursement at work for little rewards is pretty sweet. I might look into getting a Lamy or TWSBI in the future, but I'm happy with my Esterbrooks, so maybe not :)

A self imposed moratorium on pen purchases would be a herculean task for me. Kudos to you!

Other than the new Esterbrook Monstrosity, I can't think of anything that came out in this time. Speaking of the new Esterbrook, were you still active when the Visionairre was being offered on Kickstarter?

  • 2 weeks later...

No new fountains pens that appeal to you at the moment you say...Have you considered a vintage Sheaffer Targa?

I will never stop promoting that pen. It is truly amazing.

I forgot, I bought a Ballpoint Esterbrook.

The news caused a ripple in the Esterbrook continuum.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
