Silvine Memo Book

Recommended Posts

While reading the new book, "The Perfection of the Paper Clip: Curious Tales of Invention, Accidental Genius, and Stationery Obsession", i came across a mention of the Silvine Memo Book (72 pages). I got 1 via Amazon the other day. Here is a review of the same. After trying it with a Pilot VP (medium point) and a Pelikan m800 (broad), both with wet inks, i can agree it is very fountain pen friendly. Even one of my wettest nibs, Namiki Falcon broad; with those nibs/inks, no feathering or bleed through and minimal show throw, back side totally usable.

Today i ordered a 24 pack for $34 (usd). :)

yes I remember picking up some of those last time I was in the UK, I recall the paper was excellent, and quite inexpensive too. The only drawback I noticed was that the cover was very thin and it did not hold up too well in my back pocket.

they also do exercise books (similar to your composition notebooks but with a soft cover) that are fountain pen friendly - only £1.00 each for the A4 version

  • 1 year later...

Just ordered one of these after many years of falsely remembering the paper as poor.

I'm in love.

This is now my favourite FP paper. It's just right if you like very, very slightly textured paper. It's a bit "matte-er" than, say, Rhodia. But gives plenty of character, and is very satisfying to write on. Though I think you need a wet pen - say 6-7+ (whatever that means).

And they're only 48p each if you buy them in 24s. Including postage. It's unfortunate that they're so expensive in America.

I love their "Perfecto" range of notebooks in either A5 or A4. I haven't tried the "Memo" pocket-books but I assumed that they use the same paper.

The "Perfecto" is my favourite scribbling-nothing-in-particular notebook. I would go so far as saying that I prefer the paper to Rhodia, courtesy of that texture that others have referred to. The paper seems to coax ink out of reluctant writers whilst also behaving perfectly with nibs that are generous of ink flow. I don't have any fountain pens, nibs, or inks that struggle on Silvine paper, though I have a few [sometimes expensive] bits of kit that can be temperamental with Rhodia dotpads.

I feature that I also like is that they have finely perforated margins, as my scribbling-nothing-in-particular out-pourings are of such earth-shattering moment that they are immediately consigned to the recycle bin.

Cheers,

David.

Sounds interesting and like something I am after. I love to journal in fancy notebooks but some stuff I don't always want to keep so these books could serve both purposes I guess. Can you get them in the UK?

Amazon.co.uk sell some. Otherwise type into Google 'buy Silvine paper or books' and you get loads of hits. :)

I buy mine in Ryman shops. We have one in Durham, so I guess that means that everywhere will have one – Durham is fab for gazing at ancient cathedrals and castles but not so hot on shopping! Still, that's just the way I like it.

Cheers,

David.

Thanks for this, can I just ask, do you not keep anything in your journal, do you tear it all out?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
