Kim Small Ebonite Pen

I generally love pocket-sized ebonite pens. These pens are generally ED filling and non-fussy which make it a very good EDC pen. I came across Sreekumar's work in FPN and liked some of his models. The present model is a pocket-sized model from the Kim & Co , which he calls "Small". I will present the review by comparing it with another of my favourite pen- ASA Genius:

DESIGN:

fpn_1430584587__dsc01743.jpg

The pen is traditional Indian design with a barrel which tapers gently. The cap is not flush with the barrel and the section is the traditional hourglass section. The hourglass section is more pronounced in this pen. The section is a bit small for my liking. The threads have a tight tolerance and comes pregreaesed with liquidised rubber and rosin.

NIB AND FEED:

fpn_1430583743__dsc01734.jpg

The nib is a standard IPG nib which is tuned for extra smoothness and better flow. The nib is very smooth with no feedback and is a pleasure to write with. It lays down a fairly Indian F/M line, a shade thinner than my JoWo F. The feed is slightly different than the traditional Christmas tree design. Here the design is more like the sheaffer no nonsense design. This is good for the user as the pen will not burp.

WRITING SAMPLE:

VERDICT:

For INR 500, this pen is worth all the money. You are getting a tuned nib with a ED pen which wont burp. I give it 5/5.

Edit: Some corrections added due to S-K's updates

Hi

Thanks for reviewing this here. But the pen is " Kim & Co" as this design

is made by my master who works for Kim pens, Calicut and the

whole credit goes to him only. Ofcourse I tuned this nib for you.

And the sealent is liquidised rubber plus rosin - not silicone.

I don't know about the newer ones, but the older wing sung conicals all had ebonite feeders.

I have no clue about older ones. Mine are only 15 years old and these are all plastic.

I have never seen a plastic feeder inside a wingsung conical, I will be grateful if you could share some pictures of it.

Thanks!

Thanks!

Just checked it to verify my claim; yes, it is plastic.

I will share its' picture tomorrow. I have to get it clicked by my friend. I have no camera and I hate smartphones:)

After reading your post got interested regarding Ebonite Pens. So planning to buy Kim Small from Kim & Co. One of my students is from calicut so I have asked him to get me from the shop itself. Hope he would go by second half of October

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
