Yikes, just saw an ad for the M805 "Statesman" which looks like a green striped barrel 805M to me and saw the Retail is $800 now...damn, I remember when you could get this pen for under $200 and that didn't seem that long ago?....is it across the industry that prices are going up faster than a space X rocket? thanks!

$200.00 for an M80X? Hmm, when the heck was that? I bought one about 15 to 20 years ago, and I sure didn't pay anything like $200.00.

Prices only seem to be on an upwards trajectory with no looking back. I'm not sure how it is with other manufacturers. When I look back at the historical sales and what these pens were going for several years ago, well it's a bit shocking. Big difference today.

Everything is going up like a bottle rocket. Since the recession has been declared over, every greedy Gus has been pumping the pimpmobile to make up for the time they had to keep prices steady just to stay in business. Luxury goods go first, and I think that fountain pens are considered just that.

Might I dissent? Please follow the link above to the Amazon UK website, where you will find that the current price of a Pelikan M800 with Fine nib is 197 British Pounds. This includes VAT which is only charged to British purchasers. Once VAT is removed, the final price is 164 British Pounds which converts to $248 USD. With delivery to the US, comes in under $275.

Used pens, a Geha 790 use to go for €20-25-30 a couple of years then jumped to 35-40 :yikes: last year.

Saw a couple go for $70 this month. :yikes: :yikes: :o

Shouldn't have bragged for so many years how good they are. But the truth of it is the US buyers buy for real inflated prices.

They will buy a Geha school pen that I can get for €12-19 (and I think 19 is high) in German Ebay, for $85 buy now in the states.

In Pelikan bought up and closed down the Geha pen division in 1990....Geha fits into the Pelikan sub section.

Yup, I haven't been into pens that long so I'd figure about 5 - 10 or so years ago you could get a nice M800/805 from Pam for around $200 USD, I think even less possibly....

Do you mean the M805 Stresemann? If so, that's a special edition and priced a fair bit higher than the regular edition M800 and M805.

Yeah maybe that is it, didn't think it was a limited edition and if anything was just them giving their green model a new name. But if it is limited I guess I can see it.

The Stresemann is not a limited edition, it replaced the red model in their standard lineup. It's a light grey color.

The Stresemann is a regular edition, it's listed as such on Pelikan's website and is the same price as the blue, green, and black models.

Not in the UK.

It is shown as a separate series on the Pelikan website and the Red is still available so it did not replace that.

I am pretty sure the M800 in red is gone. Not only are most dealers sold out, on "www.pelikan.com" if you set the language to German it is listed as "Bei Pelikan ist dieses Modell ausverkauft" or this model is sold out.

No matter what language you pick, the Streseman is listed along side the other standard color models and not in the "Souveran special edition" section as is the new M805 demo. For the German language edition it's price is listed as 470 euro, while the other standard colors currently available are listed as 460 euro. In the US, the list price for the standard colors is $715, while for the Streseman it is listed as $800. Not clear why the spread in prices is so much greater in the US.

+1. This is my understanding as well. Red M800's seem out (just based on observation of their availability in the market) and Anthracite M805's are regular issue according to Pelikan's info.

Indeed. I asked Pelikan Singapore, who then double checked with Pelikan Germany, and they confirmed that the Stresemann is part of the regular lineup now. It might have its own page in Pelikan's website, but in the description it mentions being added to the regular offering of colours.

Souverän

From Pelikan's website.

As you can see the Stresemann is listed seperately from the rest of the Souveran range so, as has been stated on this thread by one of the UK's leading dealers in Pelikan pens, the Stresemann is a Special Edition and a lot more expensive than the regular range.

I take the point about the Red Souveran as, although it is still shown on some Pelikan sites, it does not seem to be available any longer.

I think the red version was discontinued in 2013 or early 2014.

Just for the sake of argument since people don't seem to be stating specific years, but rather using vague terms like 'so many years ago', let us say for the sake of argument we're talking 1995, 20 years ago.

$250 in 1995 had about the same buying power as about $390-$400 now days, or if we go back 30 years to 1985, $250 had the same buying power as about $560 in today's value.

Also as other's mentioned, the Stressman is a special edition. You can get an M800/M805 for around $330 or so from Japan (but will likely cost another 20-30 for shipping and fees), not counting any special editions.

It is not a special edition as Pelikan defines it, meaning that it is not a limited production run.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
