Is there any overlap in membership or even in interest between the Portland Calligraphy Society and the PDX Pen Group?

I don't know to be honest. I just joined the PDX group last month and this will be my first meeting.

That said, for me personally I would be very interested. I am slowly teaching myself copperplate using a book. I will pm you my email.

How was the meet? I work weekends so I couldn't go.

So space and time are linked together. As we are looking across space, we are looking back in time. The further and further away those stars are the further back in time you are looking. Now you are seeing a star that is say six thousand years ago. Imagine somebody at that star looking at us They would be seeing us as we were six thousand years ago. It was fantastic. This was my first time to the Lucky Lab and a meet up (for pens). Everyone was at the first really long table (as you walk in).

There were pen stories told, people talked about what kinds of pens they collect and love. People brought along pens they like for others to try (I got to try a Nakaya!!).

There was horse trading and quite a few pens you could drool over or buy. I mentioned that I love the orange of the Parker Duofold and next thing you know there was one in front of me. :yikes:

The were some young people, middle age people (my group) and wiser pen people, both males and females so it was a really nice mix of people.

I can't wait for the next one.

@Ben...I know wasn't it just!

I explained about it to my BF but he wasn't as excited about it as I was.

Is there a mailing list or something for this group? I live in Tacoma, but I'd be willing to make the drive down for a meetup.

There is a group called pdxpen on Yahoo. I think all meetup info gets posted there.

I dont know how i missed this, but I did. When, or how often do you all meet?

There is another Portland (Oregon) meetup at Lucky Lab July 11! The info is somewhere here on FPN, I believe (read about it somewhere!). I don't know the details about if it's a regular monthly meet, or who is the main organizer, etc.

It is nice to be able to go hang out (especially at the Lab :puddle: ) with others that are into pens - everyone I know just sort of nods off and glazes over when I mention pens, ink and/or paper :headsmack:

Issacrn, as writetome said, the next shindig is tomorrow at the NW Pen Roundup. It will be in a private space in the Lucky Lab (NW Quimby). I believe there will be 12+ dealers at the event. I'd imagine we'd have to eat for sustenance to gird our loins to shop more. :) So there will probably be a social aspect to it as well.

Also you might want to sign up for the Pelikan Hubs 2015. It will be a mix of people from the PDXpen yahoo group and the people from FPN. The date is September 25th. PM me if you need more info.

Oh I saw why you missed it and my hat is off to you!

Did you sign up for the Pelikan Hubs 2015? Its September 25th (Friday at 6:30pm). If you're bringing friends/guests it's no problem just have them register. Also don't get freaked about the 'pelikan will share your info statement'. They will send your email/name to the PDX Hub Master so they can let you know where the event will be.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
