Anyone else notice that nibs.com's website now says that Nakaya has discontinued the ao-tamenuri finish? If you want one, grab it now.

I wonder why? It is a beautiful color. I understand the Nakaya mark is pretty limited, but I would figure that finish would be pretty popular.

I'm guessing it is because they weren't consistent with th color. I have one, and it is definitely more green than blue. I have read that from others as well. I could be wrong, and would love to hear feedback from others.

I also bought one that turned out to be way more green than I like. I was expecting that nice turquoise blue poking out from under the black, but got a muddy green colour instead.

Current Favourites

Pen- Pilot Custom 74

Ink- J.Herbin Emerald of Chivor

Yes, there has been quite a great variation between colors. Still, it's a pity they aren't trying to find a way to standardise the colors better.

I wouldn't call mine (ascending dragon) 'muddy' green, but it's definitely more green than the blue-turquoise I was hoping for.

Too many pens; too little writing.

Unique colour. I love mine and use it every day. It's very sad news if it's true that they've been discontinued.

Oo. Can people post pics of theirs so we can try and see the variation? Mine is on a white background. Camera from my phone - sorry

Ack, is the color accurate? That green looks like it's leaning more towards yellow than blue!

Sarahfar, that is a gorgeous pen! I am not sure if that color will be discontinued, because I think the tamesukashi technique may do different things to the colors. One would have to ask Nakaya or nibs.com.

Y2bd - On my computer, it is pretty accurate - although I wouldn't say I ever see yellow - but a lot of green.

This is really accurate at most times, but in some light it looks a little turquoise green too, I love it. My Decapod piccolo is more copper that has pertained green/blue. But I do warn people that Ao changes depending on light....http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v209/mikefarha/IMG_0145_zps311796a1.jpg

Wow...thanks for sharing this picture - I'm sure it looks more amazing in person!

Mine is definitely more green-ish blue than blue-ish green. The whole review is here if you're interested. The dark top coat may have lightened a touch since this picture was taken.

Thanks, painterspal. I read your review (beautiful!) and followed the link to quindlen's. His or her pictures are on a blue background. I wonder how that pen would look on a neutral one - from the pictures, that pen really does look blue.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
