Poppy Orange Mix

Recommended Posts

I just received a new Edison Collier pen, in Persimmon Swirl celluloid, and I wanted a really nice, deep reddish-orange to fill it with. Fuyu-gaki by itself is too orange for me, and the other oranges I have are just too circus-bright.

My inspiration is the dark orange-red poppies that are popular here in the Midwest. The mix is OK, but not perfect. The shade I have is good, but it looks a bit dull/flat to me. Ideas?

With a touch of cyan (its complementary color), it darkened a bit --I like it a lot more this way!

Not much for orange inks (I'm just not an orange ink person), but that touch of cyan helped a lot. And I love the Art Nouveau style artwork -- really fits the color somehow.

I wonder how some turquoise or cyan would affect Fuyu-gaki by itself. Hated the color, but it was a very well-behaved ink for me.

You might try a test to see how you like it. Fuyu by itself is just too garish for me (I'm not much of an orange ink person either!), but warmed up with red and then deepened with cyan might give you just the shade you're looking for. Good luck!

I really like the pen.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Me, too. But the only problem (??) is that you cannot post the cap. The pen is really wide —which is nice in the hand— but you have to hold onto the cap or put it down somewhere. It's a minor thing, but just slightly vexing.

However, the gasps when you take the pen out in front of others (class, depositions?) makes it all worth it! :)

I don't like posting my caps... So I am good. I have this thing to always keep the cap in my left hand, while I write with my right hand.

Is a great habit when people ask you for a pen, I always give it away uncapped.... they always come back. ;)

What nib you have there.. I have an extremely wet medium..... sometimes I wish for a Broad Stub. :puddle: :puddle:

The Persimmon Swirl celluloid is so lovely. I would love a pen made from this material.

When I saw it the first ink I thought of was Diamine Pumpkin but they have one or two reds and oranges that look a fairly close match.

I have been smiling for the last two days @ the image of the "gasps emitted when you whip out your Persimmon Swirled Edison in either the class or court room!" And I am sure they gasp even more when they see what comes "gushing out" if you have loaded your "Poppy Orange!" ( I have that same pen but have only used it @ home BUT the Akkerman Boven I have used does kinda make ME "gasp!")

Excellent point —I've heard that before about hanging on to the cap while someone tries to write with your fountain pen. And, of course, it keeps the cap from splitting from being posted.

This Edison has a regular b r o a d nib, while my "Old Marble" Herald Grande has a 1.1 Stub. Both are really nice pens. And for the money, can't hardly beat 'em for the "wow" factor. ;)

Oh, to be the source of gasping when one whips out a pen! :D And yes, Oranje Boven is a color that would go very nicely with this pen!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
