De Atramentis Pearl Violet

Preface: The elite group of SuperPinks (which I am proud to be part of) has been doing some ink testing over the past month. Our leader, the great Amberleadavis, sent each of us some vials of ink, with obscure labels and asked us to test them objectively. I did reviews of all of them before, in a different place, treating them all as mysteries. The reviews here are copy and pasted, with minor edits, for your enjoyment. If you see any references to "mystery ink," you now will know what I'm talking about.

Well I got my inks today and I'm working on a myriad of reviews for the next few days. 3 pens inked. 3 inks a day. We'll see how fast I go. On top of my normal ink reviews, I am also making an ink journal of the swab and basic characteristics so I don't forget which inks are in my pen! Here is my review of the "PV" ink. It will be objective as possible.

This review will follow my normal standard format for reviews, with pictures following a small blurb. The pictures were taken with an iPhone 6, back camera, in artificial lighting. Effort has been made to show the true color, but your milage may vary depending on your monitor. If you would like to see all my ink images, you are free to go to http://files.goviralforyou.com/Inks/Reviews

The review was written with my favorite, the Nemosine Singularity Demonstrator, in a TWSBI B nib. The TWSBI B is slightly finer than the Nemosine B, but not by much. It's only a hairline difference.

The review was written on HP 32lb Premium Laser Paper, which can be found at Staples for the whooping price of $19.99, or on Amazon for $15.39. This is my new "standard" paper I will be using for all my reviews, writing, and comparisons. I still have a bit of HP 28lb, which is now discontinued, but I am going to be moving to this one now, as it is much better, IMO.

The swab for the ink will be in the later pictures of my ink journal.

This is a light purple-gray ink that is a tiny bit dry. The ink provides a medium amount of lubrication, that is adequate but not exceptionally smooth. There is some shading, from a light color to a medium color. It is quite noticeable. There is no spread, feathering, show through or bleed through on this paper at all. The ink is medially saturated. I have not experienced any problems with the ink yet. I have a guess that this ink is an Iron Gall ink. Just a random hunch.

The ink takes roughly 12 seconds to dry which is not too shabby as most of my inks take around 16 seconds. This isn't a big problem for me as I'm a strong overwriter.

Here is a poorly drawn ghost to show how the ink looks with sketching, and coloring.

Here are pictures from the ink journal I have of these mystery inks. They include a writing sample, coloring sample, swab sample, and basic characteristics of the ink from my B nibs. Ignore the blue splotch on the bottom of the second image. That was from a water spill on the next page over.

I left the comparison section blank on the review form, but I will be showing swabs of similar inks here.

1. Private Reserve Arabian Rose

2. Private Reserve Plum

3. Mystery Ink "T"

Here is a water test. The top grid had drops of water placed for 10 seconds, then vigorously wiped downwards. The bottom text did not receive any drops of water and was only wiped with in the same motion as the grid. This ink performed exceptionally well on this test! The ink did have some lifting, but very minor. The purple hue did come off quite a bit, but it left a gray line which is still 100% visible. There was little to no wet smear.

Lastly, here is a scan of the review. Use the scan to read the rest of the review. I did not intend for it to show color accuracy. The pictures are the most accurate representation of the color.

That's all folks! I would give this ink a 8/10.

Like you, my first though was R&K Scabiosa.

Here are swab cards of both Pearl Violet and Scabiosa. They are found at my ink swab database at http://www.inkymadness.tk

Are those on different colored note cards or different lighting conditions?

I believe the cards were color corrected to show true ink color.

I did a comparison to see how close Scabiosa and Pearl Violet are. The two are only similar on higher quality (less absorbent) paper. The difference between the cards is mainly age --one of the cards was an old one that had been sitting for a long time in a drawer, the other is new. But the color of the ink was adjusted to be as true to my eye as possible.

How would you compare Pearl Violet to J. Herbin Poussiere de Lune, and does the card in your swab database represent the older Poussiere de Lune or the current one?

Well here are the two swabs side by side. I don't actually have the Poussiere de Lune ink, as this database is crowd sourced. However, The Herbin looks a bit brighter and a tad bit more red.

I don't mean to derail the thread, but I couldn't find info on switching nemosine nibs for TWSBI ones, is that what you simply did, or was it something else?

TWSBI Vac700 nib units use standard #6 size nibs. Nemosine pens also use #6 size nibs so you can pull the metal nib out of both the nib unit and Nemosine pen, then swap them. You can also get #6 sized nibs from other manufacturers, such as Goulet, or Franklin-Christof.

Hey, where did the images go?

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

Definitively not my color. Does it feather a bit? it seems so in one of the images, but maybe is the paper.

I think that De Atramentis Jeanne d'Arc is the same ink, but with a different label. I tried a sample a couple of years ago and thought it was pretty, but a little light for legibility (although I've seen inks that were worse). It had a fair amount of spread, even in a dry pen -- most of the "regular" De Atramentis inks are pretty wet, and this one was no exception. It had some bleedthrough on bad paper (in a Piccadilly sketchbook) when a lot of ink was put down, but didn't feather and dried quickly.

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

Looks like it is. First the Pearl Violet... and then the Jeanne d Arc (note the two spellings on the latter site).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
