A New Journal With Tomoe River

Since I really enjoyed working on the first springback book, I decided I wanted to make another one, which will be for my boyfriend, too. It has 200 sheets of white Tomoe River, which folded make 400 sheets, 800 pages counting both sides. It weights about 1 kg and it took me about 13 hours to complete it.

Here is how it looks:

I started by folding the Tomoe River paper into signatures and sawing the holes.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rU5d6rE9OsM/VRrFnVr9rHI/AAAAAAAACLc/QnzUTanNY-A/s1600/IMG_8844.JPG

Then I sew the signatures using ribbon.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-VLaGqUkRG1A/VRrGiNoCeeI/AAAAAAAACLs/nYAHmni-kRY/s1600/IMG_8845.JPG

I glued the back and then I trimmed the book. After rounding it, I applied a layer of backing cloth.

And then, the first thin cover comes.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2GS4_ut4nAE/VRrI0yQpW1I/AAAAAAAACMQ/0sKBM5JbDm0/s1600/IMG_8856.JPG

I made my own headbands. I love how they resemble a braid!

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-96jRXm2rsKo/VRrGraoAViI/AAAAAAAACL8/-8Yl03hk21w/s1600/IMG_8850.JPG

Then I glued the bookmark and the headbands on the spine and added a few layers more of backing material.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NeGsTjdqGT8/VRrKa-qlBmI/AAAAAAAACMk/26TbtbQgW0w/s1600/IMG_8857.JPG

Then, I glued the second thin cover.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ISlN7OxNAkw/VRrKdBFoK9I/AAAAAAAACMs/Eq5IJYm0zTE/s1600/IMG_8858.JPG

Then I started adding layers on the spine, so it would have the same thickness as the front and back covers.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-T2UtBqUOtOo/VRrKdmgL-pI/AAAAAAAACMw/9YNz9px5EzI/s1600/IMG_8859.JPG

Here I have already applied the thick cover.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-3H7MA2uXVmY/VRrMNjhSYJI/AAAAAAAACNA/JFbl9AQVVO4/s1600/IMG_8904.JPG

I glued some faux nerves on the spine.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OpaXGJ7Xx4s/VRrMQKbh-aI/AAAAAAAACNM/AsiQqnNy8oE/s1600/IMG_8905.JPG

Then I cut the leather.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YEDruwowifs/VRrN0U8xeMI/AAAAAAAACNk/IY98CCbmk6I/s1600/IMG_8929.JPG

And I paired it.

(I'm not very good at it yet!!)

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hLmsk8jmoys/VRrODLJUirI/AAAAAAAACNs/IJS5-xqRZXk/s1600/IMG_8932.JPG

Then I used iron sulphate, beer and oxalic acid to create some effects on the leather (yes, regular beer!).

Once dry, the leather was ready to be applied on the book.

After doing some gilding, it was done.

And pictures of the final results:

The endpapers are paste paper that I decorated myself.

Wow - I am so jealous of your skills. You should sell them here. Working out the labour rate, materials etc they would run at about $900. I'll start saving. Really love the look of the leather. Congratulations.

Your craftsmanship is incredible. I love the blue color. Your boyfriend must do a lot of writing to merit all these beautiful journals!

I'm still trying to figure out how to list all my pens down here.

Thank you! Actually, I will start taking custom orders from today. Of course, they won't be as much as $900 by far! Hehe :D

Thank you very much for your kind words. Actually, he writes a lot, a couple of hours everyday. He can easily finish a 200 page journal :P.

Awesome

How does one do those patterns on the leather?

Well, it's a chemistry thing. Look at the pictures of the leather: on the first picture, the leather as I bought. On the second one, I applied a solution of beer (regular drinking beer I bought at the supermarket) and iron sulphate. The leather becomes black. It goes completely black. Once it is dry, third picture, I soak a piece of cloth in oxalic acid (I use gloves, since it is skin irritating and potentially dangerous), wrap it unevenly and apply it on the leather. That is how it leaves the pattern. It's like it "burns" the color, that's why the color that appears has nothing to do with the original color.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
