Enough Interest In Mabie Todd, Swan Or Otherwise?

Recommended Posts

Cob, let's found a Mabie-Todd company. Then we will get our Mabie-Todd section here.

Ha ha!

What we have to do - all MT enthusiasts - is do our best to keep the posts coming even if it's only "What's your latest Swan etc?) and keep on raising the profile of Mabie Todd; this, it goes without saying is entirely deserved.

But I have, rather distressingly noticed on ebay from time to time, that some outfit called Judd's sells some sort of writing instruments under the name Mabie Todd.

They have plenty of neck I must say.

I have it somehow in my mind, that there must be a modern company under that name to qualify for an own section. If it is so, then Judd should do.

Fascinating thread. I can only enthusiastically second the idea of a separate Swan Mabie Todd forum. There are so many interesting debating points surrounding the nibs, numbering and patterns of this excellent pen marque that it would be great to have a go-to place for these discussions. In its absence, I'll do my best to keep bothering the GB forums with twittering about my latest greedy enthusiasm!

Thanks Missuslovett; there you are Cepasaccus, now we are three.

Who else will offer to help with this worthy cause?

We should create more new threads instead of putting everything into one thread.

Good Point.

I'll start now

Cob, do you distribute your MT between GB and USA section? Or do you put everything into GB?

So far everything has gone into the GB section, though I have a NY Chatelaine and also an Edward Todd pen that I might write something about there. It's a pain, since I like to know where my friends and fellow MT fans are!

A proper Mabie Todd section would solve this dilemma at a stroke!

My last gotten Mabie, Todd & Bard (c.1905) with a GF Wave Chased Double Scroll pattern overlay and an over and under feed.

fpn_1435865633__swan_1m.jpg

Beautiful pen with interesting +++ > features that I hope you will discuss at length.

Will you be dip testing, or actually filling, writing with this? Or admiration only in your collection?

quiet suggestion.

self build the study thread/forum. it has been done before.

tiled as a M.T. & Study so that search engine inquiries list the thread at the top of each search.

photos, ephemera, supportive discussion.

enthusiasts will come. (edited: Marc, for example, is here : )

Add links to each subject (your profile so it's on each post) for quick cross-link reference

Click top right: Follow This Topic. power in #'s

central US/UK study rather than multiple (disjointed threads) may? eventually serve your purpose.

edited: exiting > too many appreciative fluff comments, though sincere, may detract.

last inquiry: is that repousse only, or additional hand chasing? the unique under/over feed, would love to see a writing demo.. are these now too fragile to use?

thanks for sharing > all of the additions! wow.

I find Mabie Todd threads in three places - Great Britian, US, and History. Lets bridge that divide, shall we (a little eye candy from my last show in Columbus)

At least one of my MT (MTB's) is inked - if I am not far from home for a longer time. Usually it is a BCHR C2 Safety with an F medium-flex nib and ladder feed (the forth from the left to right). This FP is made in England c.1910-1915. The other ones are manufactured in USA.

When I finally get home in August, I'm planning on a post entitled "The Birds of Mabie Todd" with pictures.

I have:

  1. Swans (American and British)
  2. Blackbirds (British)
  3. Swallows (American)
  4. Jackdaws (British)
  5. Cygnets - baby swans - (both British and American I think - the American is a long/short, while the British is a Blackbird)
  6. Merle Blancs - White Blackbirds - these are essentially rebranded Blackbirds for either the Belgian or French Markets depending on who you ask
  7. Kiwi - Blackbirds rebadged for either somewhere in Europe or New Zealand. Not sure.
  8. Gaviota - seagulls - Blackbirds rebadged for Spain

The Big Blackbird was rebadged as Merle Blanc Ceant and Gaviota Gigante,

There is supposed to be a mythical Mabie Todd called the Kingfisher, from what I've read for the Australian market - I think there was a post about it on FPN, but I've never seen one myself. Edited - I just saw something about a "Starling" pen that looks like a Blackbird. Again, something I've never actually seen in person.

Any others I'm missing?

As far as I know the Cygnet was a stylo pen - or ink pencil made in England. As for the Starling, here are two useful pieces.

Hi Cob,

Yes, indeed - Cygnet was a stylo. I have a long/short in red hard rubber made in the USA.

As for the Starling... arghh! Another pen to find. Actually that's sort of fun.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
