Dragontoots Turquoise Review

I receive a sample of DragonToots Turquoise in a concentrated form a very long time ago, but haven't done a full review of this ink because I had a bad feathering experience on my old paper. DragonToots is an eBay seller, who has found a good stock on ink powder somewhere. Amber sent this ink as a concentrate, so I diluted it to 50%. People in the SuperPinks program were constantly raving about it, so I had to come back to it on my newer and better everyday paper. Well, after a long hiatus, I'm back with a review of this ink.

This review will follow my normal standard format for reviews, with pictures following a small blurb. The pictures were taken with an iPhone 6, back camera, in artificial lighting. Effort has been made to show the true color, but your milage may vary depending on your monitor. If you would like to see all my ink images, you are free to go to http://files.goviralforyou.com/Inks/Reviews

Here is a preview of the ink. It is a solid turquoise colored ink.

The review was written with my favorite, the Nemosine Singularity Demonstrator, in a TWSBI B nib. The TWSBI B is slightly finer than the Nemosine B, but not by much. It's only a hairline difference.

The review was written on HP 32lb Premium Laser Paper, which can be found at Staples for the whooping price of $19.99, or on Amazon for $15.39. This is my new "standard" paper I will be using for all my reviews, writing, and comparisons. I still have a bit of HP 28lb, which is now discontinued, but I am going to be moving to this one now, as it is much better, IMO.

Here is the swab of the ink. This was actually a swab of DTT at 100%, which is the concentrated form I initially received.

The ink is a solid turquoise ink with some interesting characteristics. The ink is a moderately wet ink, with a good amount of lubrication. There is definitely some shading, from a light to medium hue. There is a little feathering from my wet nib, but nothing too major. It was much worse on my old paper. That is why I stopped using the ink after a bad feathering experience. There is no spread, show through, or bleed through on this paper. The ink is very saturated.

This ink has an extreme amount of sheen on the wettest parts of writing. This is my first ink with such a pronounced amount of sheen, so I was pleasantly surprised when I finally managed to get some on my paper. This is what made me like this ink a bit more. Here are two pronounced examples of sheen. One is from the review (I spelled hiatus wrong) and the other is from a note Amber sent me on her onion skin paper.

Here is a poorly drawn ghost to show how the ink looks with sketching, and coloring.

The ink takes a bit longer to dry that some other inks, averaging at roughly 19 seconds. However, this isn't a big problem for me as I'm a strong overwriter.

I left the comparison section blank on the review form, but I will be showing swabs of similar inks here. This is a my new format that I am trying out for the comparisons. Tell me what you think.

Left to right. The images were stretched to fit in one row. Color was not altered.

1. Waterman Inspired Blue

2. Blackstone Ink Concentrate BRB06 11.11%

3. XFountainPens Deep Ocean Blue

4. Private Reserve Tropical Blue

Here is a water test. The top grid had drops of water placed for 10 seconds, then vigorously wiped downwards. The bottom text did not receive any drops of water and was only wiped with in the same motion as the grid. This ink performed horrendously on this test. There was a large amount of lifting on the grid, rendering the lines amount invisible. The amount of wet smear was atrocious, leaving the text barely visible. Don't even think about using this ink for documents.

Lastly, here is a scan of the review. Use the scan to read the rest of the review. I did not intend for it to show color accuracy. The pictures are the most accurate representation of the color.

That's all folks! I would give this ink a 8.5/10. If you liked this review, stay tuned for more to come!

Thank you!

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
