Kingsize Bulk Filler - Carbon Composite Diamond Inlay Pattern

Recommended Posts

Hi fountain pen friends

Just finished this new prototype in my shop, using a carbon composite with diamond inlay pattern.

I doubt however if Conid will ever start making these, to labor intensive….

Cap , body, section, filling knob and clip/cap enclosure nut are all made from this material.

Machining is very difficult, had to use all three cutting edges of my carbide knife insert to make only these parts..

A pack of dusty black cutting powder was spread all over my lathe.

Turning the material down to the desired convex dimensions the diamond pattern disappears since one enters different inlay layers of the material .

The pattern is now like little black and grey squares, looking rather nice in my opinion.

After sanding and polishing I quickly realized one can't polish this material properly because of the fiber structure.

So the only way to get a decent shining surface was coating with cyanoacrylate glue sanding, apply a second layer, sanding and polishing.

A very delicate and time consuming operation!

The result looks however not bad in my opinion, what do you think ?

It was very difficult to show the material pattern, but on the last pictures i've been able to catch it somewhat

As always your comments, thoughts and critique are most welcome !

Regards, Francis

Very attractive. Elegant. Lends itself well to the pen depicted.

Would it be reasonable to expect the surface shine to improve yet further, or give greater depth to the finish, with more layers, sanding and polishing applied - Nakaya-esque?

Regardless, it certainly looks and sounds like material fit for a King. I would most certainly buy one in this material.

I was just thinking how great this would look with a few coats of clear lacquer :)

Too many pens; too little writing.

Hi Pavoni,

Thanks for your kind reaction !

The surface is very shiny, but I'm unfortunately not a good photographer….

I only decides for coating after realizing that I could not properly polish the naked material.

And at that moment the parts were already made to size….

So I've applied the maximum thickness possible.

When making new ones I would surely reduce the diameters of the parts with 0.3-0.4mm

Doing so I could effectively apply more coating layers and end at the desired diameters with a layer of 0.15-0.2mm

AS always there is a learning curve...

Francis

Try any arts and crafts store, mainly the ones that have paints. This is the best one I know, never yellows, cures in 30 min at around 67º.

Prepare yourself, it´s pricey :) here costs around 60€ and only has 120gr...

Please be careful, don´t use open flames near by, it´s flammable.

Hello Francis,

This carbon project is absolutely mindblowing, Did you wait for the start of the new F1 season to launch this beauty? The pattern of the carbon is often seen in interiors of high end supercars. I think you can use Klarlack especially designed for carbon, not so expensive as the hobby product, 60 euro for more than 1 lt. http://www.lackprofi24.de/2k-carbo-clear for example, but there are others.

Thanks dear Opooh, this effectively looks to be the optimal coating product !

Excellent Francis.

May I ask which nib you used to write the accompanying descriptors?

Thanks Jeffrey !

The nib is a home ground titanium 1.1mm stub.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
