What Do You Think About The Montblanc Notebooks?

fravin

Recommended Posts

I just bought a Selection Notebook medium, and find a fantastic paper in the notebook.

The folio is typical MB leather products, shinning in every aspect.

I have looked around and didn't find some information here, so what do you think about these MB notebooks?

I've asked the boutique girl some refills, and for my surprise they cost same as Moleskine here in Brazil.

It's been a while since I tested mine, the refills for the folio are the good ones IIRC but yes, expensive as everything MB. The boutique here had a close-out sale and I bought their remaining stock - three! Even with the discount, it was hefty.

When I bought my Boheme I received a sketchbook, completely complimentary, a great looking book but the paper was horrible. I ended up going over every page with a moist cloth in hopes of getting a better surface, and it did help, a little. Now not every ink I put on the page feathers and bleeds, as it did before. But not all inks are taken well, so with that one it's still hit or miss. The folio refill notebooks are fine, though - although admittedly I have not tested all of them, just a random sample.

Good luck with yours!

The new thinner "#09596 Notes" is fantastic.

The older one "Notes & Matters", with the same reference #, was a thicker book, and the paper, although good, was unrefined compared to the new paper.

Nice upgrade from Montblanc.

I use a wet BB nib on this all the time, and it is a champ regarding show through, and steadfast regarding bleeding, feathering; the answer for the two latter is NO!

The paper feels excellent to both the fingers and pens.

You could waste a lot of time and money trying to find something to put in it's place, but you would be doing just that.

A+++ on the new - Reference: 09596

Great choice on the Selection Notebook, enjoy it in good health fravin!

Seems i had a bad batch then, didn't bother buying a refill, since the one that came with mine was really bad, feathering, show through, you name it. Now i wonder if it was because it sat there opened for too long, might order a replacement from appelboom to try my luck since the dimensions are a bit odd, and haven't found anything similar enough to try.

They are excellent, but they are more expensive than almost every other brand.

Writing paper is writing paper and you can get some really good ones. I wouldn't pay the price that Montblanc charge for theirs when there are so many great alternatives around for less.

That's my version. I just loved the paper. And over here it costs the same as one medium moleskine.

I have a large Montblanc leather agenda and bought the planner inserts for the 2015 year. The paper is horrible for fountain pens, to the point that I had to bring out my MB ballpoint to keep in the agenda. I tried different fountain pens (MB, Lamy, Pilot, Parker) and inks (MB, Lamy, Iroshizuku, Noodler's) on the paper, most of which showed significant feathering and quite an amount of bleed through.

This disappointed me a whole lot, as I wanted to keep my 146 in the agenda and use it strictly. I don't know if I received a bad batch, but even the sample sheets that came with the leather agenda showed this issue.

I got the 2015 calendar for the A5 agenda and it works great with FP i use my 146 with M nib, a lot better than the larges notes notebook, was your calendar sealed?

Yes, sealed from the boutique. Maybe it was just my bad luck.

I got the python notes and find the paper excellent for FP. The cover is a matter of preference, but the notes refills are good. However, if you are using a wet B nib, I wouldn't recommend writing on both sides of the page.

It also makes a great background for photographing your pens :)

cheers

Interesting thread, and thanks for the pictures.

I would really like a montblanc A5 notebook cover in brown or tan, but they dont seem to be available via MB, and they are very rare on ebay :(

Hey Da Vinci,

Over here the boutiques are selling a note book cover in Caramel leather, with zip. Like mine. Did I you asked for it in a Boutique?

They were discontinued a while ago, i only got mine at a boutique because no one bought it and it just sat there, probably because of the price, although mine is cognac a bit more reddish than tan.

Nice cover Wael, i see it's a limited edition of some sort, even the notebook is different and seems to have a mother of pearl emblem.

Hi Fravin,

No only looked on the website, and auction site. Should be able to get to a boutique later this week though, fingers crossed :)

I think it's the two new models on the website, you can see one a bit brown but they only have pictures of the inside, one is the blue he got. Best of luck, i know mine was made in black, tan and cognac, haven't seen one on eBay though, just the regular shiny black.

I know that MB refresh their line up every so often and I doubt they'll leave such a hole in their offerings. They might be updating their line up. But you're right, it is hard to find them on ebay.

cheers

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
