Monte Rosa Cracked Feed Question

Mookli

Recommended Posts

Greetings,

I have a Monte Rosa with broken feed collar.

Is this part available anywhere, or does this require a donor pen?

Than I know of, that part can only be found in a donor pen, but try Speerbob, he has lots of replacement parts from Montblanc and he is a really nice seller.

I believe that a 342, 032, 252 collar will fit there.

But why not machining one with hard rubber? It is not hard.

That could almost be a pun ! :lticaptd:

Yes I was just thinking that.

Even though I was considering polycarbonate for its elasticity and strength.

I doubt the collar does much but hold the good parts together. If it is dimensionally correct it should work.

No pun intended Mookli!! It is really hard to do subtle humour in a language that is not your own and after some failed tries I gave up :)

It was really just a suggestion as I know you master the lathe very well and that is probably a 30min to 1 hour job ( i´m not fast), faster and cheaper than sourcing out a new one, and a lot more fun!!

I have never tried with Polycarbonate, but with hard rubber I have made one for a Pelikan 101N I have .The original ones were made in hard rubber and they are very robust and have some elasticity to accommodate the feed and nib.

If I am not mistaken the thread there should be 36TPI, but please check it first.

Best regards
Vasco

piscov,

I think I will use hard rubber, as they say, If it works, don't fix it.

Hari317,

I will let you know if I have extras.

I carefully checked out the ferrule today and made a drawing

The original is a injection molded, my guess would be Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. I successfully glued the Ferrule with methyl ethyl ketone, . The repair is only good enough for measuring the part, and it still should be replaced.

The center bore is a precise fit to the feed and a counter bore provides additional room for the nib and additionally controls the depth of the nib.

wonderful. Thanks for sharing.

0.634 pitch is nearly equivalent to a 40TPI thread(0.635mm), ME (model engineer) range.

would a modern material like PEEK be better for making the new housing?

In case you wish to write to me, pls use ONLY email by clicking here. I do not check PMs. Thank you.

Yes, and actually I think a 1/4-40TPI die will work.

I will let you know, I have one coming in.

and Yes, if you had some peek laying around, it should work OK.

No mater what material you use, a little trial and error will be required to fine tune the final dimensions.

The critical feature being the friction fit between the feed, nib and Ferrule.

As you probably noticed I didn't tolerance my drawing. My plan is to go high on that number and lap in the last few thousands by hand.

I think that you can easily make this with a tap, die, and lathe. Won't be a problem, frankly... just a bit more care is needed.

You are absolutely right, the part is basic, you don't even need a die, it could be cut single point.

My only problem is, i make parts all day long and by quitting time I really don't want to spend more time in the shop!

Eventually I will come in on a Sunday and knock out a bunch of stuff I need.

OK, I finally got around to making a few.

So yes, a acorn die will compress down far enough to cut a 6mm - 40Tpi thread.

I used black Delrin, a nice strong material.

I drilled the hole on the tight side and lapped in in for a good fit on the feed.

and all worked as planned.

Hari317 I have some extra as promised. PM me if still interested.

All good health! Dear Mookli, is it possible for me to purchase this item? I have exactly the same pen without the above-mentioned sleeve. I live in Russia.

Best regards, Fedor.

Fedor,

I am sorry to say I don't have any more at this time. If I make some again, I will let you know.

I must admit that I registered only to post on this thread :)

I have an old Monte Rosa 041 that my late aunt left me. It holds a great emotional value to me.

During last cleaning I overtightened the ferule with the nib and feed, and it cracked.

Dear Mookli, if you make any new sleeves, I would greatly appreciate if you could give me a chance to purchase one. Thanks for the great info in this thread!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
