Hello,

Good afternoon everyone.

To those with the lovely Moon Pearl or JFK 1917, how do you like them so far? Do they get much use? And between the 2, which one would you pick?

Thanks.

Both are pretty much the same price, weight, thickness and size. Both write like a MB.. a nice, thick, wet line. Both are smooth heavy writters.

It all comes down to your personal taste on how the pens look and what you value most.

JFK is a Limited Edition, so it will be a little bit harder to see on the street (or the board meeting). Moon Pearl is not, so it is all a matter of money to have one.

If you are a collector of of the Great Characters Edition, the JFK pen is a must. If you are like me, I buy pens I really like, then it´s all a matter of pernonal taste.

For me, is the moon Pearl. Since I am not from the U.S. the colors don´t make my heart pound. The pen is too patriotic for me. I bought the JFK Special Edition (elegant navy blue color) and the Moon Pearl is arriving today after the F nib wait.

Cheers

Thank you for your insight and reinforcement. I also like to buy pens that I really like and to use. I really like the JFK 1917. But if I buy it, it may not leave my house much. It is a little too patriotic and flashy for me to use in a general setting. On the other hand, I found the moon pearl to be very attractive. Yet, it is not overly flashy. It is the only MB raden-ish pen available in boutique right now. Although some say, the nib on the moon pearl is too small for its size. I believe it is a design decision. MB used a simple, mono color, smaller nib on the moon pearl to draw the attention to the MOP inlays themselves. The outline of the pen, without cap, is an elegant elongated oval. Something, the 9 nib is not able to provide, it is a little too attention seeking for this pen. Just my option.

And very nice pick up BTW.

I am one of those people. The cynic in me would say that they are restricting the #9 nib for "flagship" pens like the 149 and the 149 skeletons (and yikes are those expensive).

Your answer would make good marketing for MB. :)

A few weeks ago i went to the MB boutique and spent a reasonably long time pretending to write with the Moon Pearl and JFK 1917. I thought the JFK felt better in my hand, but the design does not speak to me. I just don't like the way they executed the pen and I don't like the initials engraved on the clip. The Moon Pear was a great looking pen in my opinion. Certainly more subtle, but also more of a design aesthetic that works for my tastes. Yes, the metal section will bother some, but I have other POA pens and a Hitchcock with the metal section and it does not bother me. If it just had the larger nib I would buy one.

Tank you for your input zaddick. I do think the JFK's sailing theme is a little over the top, should sailing be the focal point in how we should remember JFK by? The moon pearl is definitely more subtle and my guess is, most of the moon pearl buyers are users. While the JFK 1917 buyers are more of the collectors.

  • 2 weeks later...

I own JFK 1917 and I like it a lot. The colours are solid and strong.

Moonpearl is also nice but I don't think the price is reasonable.

  • 2 years later...

currently debating with myself if I should treat myself with a 1917...

Can the 1917owners share some real life pictures?

Do you use it outside of your house?

I say the Moon Pearl is one breath taking pen, the snow cap, the body, I love it, about the JFK, the body is very similar than the Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, and I prefer the Antoine, that's why I own one already, the JFK is just ok for me.

Cheers!

The 1917 is not too similar to the Exupéry. As the 1917 is a silver body and blue cap, where the special editions of both JFK and exupéry are both blue body and cap.

For both are unique pieces, only the 1917 is limited in quantity, if that matters. The moon Pearl is quite heavy, though it is a stunning looking piece.

Is it not possible to see both in person before making the decision? Personally I need to see and feel the pen in person before I make a choice to purchase or not.

Pwsuba,

My bad, the one that is similar (to me) is the "regular" JFK with the "regular" Exupéry, still I prefer the Moon Pearl but it's always personal preference.

I agree, the special editions of each look similar, the limited editions of each stand out. I found the Exupéry the better looking of the two, in both special and limited edition.

I will definitely check the 1917 out in person...if my dealer can get a hold of it.

Just called my contact at Hamburg boutique to track down a 1917... kind of hard to track them down...they are almost all sold out.

I was just wondering...to buy or not to buy...from the pictures I like the white blue red pretty much...but there are hardly any reviews or pictures of it.

I have the "regular" special edition JFK

Don't think I've actually seen the 1719 JFK in person. But I have seen the moon Pearl. But, I'm drawn to the limited edition pens more than the 'standard' pens.

I don't believe they have sold much more than 2000 moon pearls, numbering LEs is just marketing. The moon pearl is a fantastic pen with a MOP star at a great price.

I think so too, the MOP looks great, I want to add a MOP pen to my collection at some point, I have in mind a Classique 90th anniversary edition with the MOP star, it looks stunning.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
