Naples Blue - Private Reserve

Private Reserve Ink was founded by Terry W. Johnson and Susan Schube in the workroom of Avalon Jewelers/Gallery in Zionsville, IN, as an addition to the fountain pen department. Terry's vision was simple... "Why not have fountain pen ink in a rainbow of colors to expand the bounds of writing beyond standard black, blue, red and green."

Naples Blue is fresh shade of blue. I'm not really thrilled by it.

This is actually one of the few blues I really like and have at least one pen inked at all times. What I mostly like is the shading.. in the right pen is really dramatic.

Thanks for the review Vis!!!!!!

I like it so much I bought a bottle and dedicated my Bexley 58 to it! Love it's flow, lubricity & color.

  • 1 year later...

It is one of my wife's favorites. To me it is a very calming color, but does not make me want to use it.

My impressions of this ink are from what must have been a renegade bottle of Naples Blue.

Mine was really really dark, thick. It ended up being the first bottle of ink I threw out.

Be Happy, work at it. Namaste

Truthfully, it doesn't really do anything for me.

beautiful color, imo, more green like a teal, than my pelikan turquoise. i am almost at the end of a bottle (the first i'll actually finish) because i choose it so often. even so, i'm not sure i'll be buying more. i frequently change my ink color of choice, perhaps each week or two, so my pen needs to be cleaned. prnb is tenacious in the pen! flush, flush, and flush some more, still a hint will remain on the drying towel. it finds its way to my hands more than any other ink, and can even penetrate non-latex disposable gloves. still, numerous flaws are overlooked in pursuit of beauty.

I think I know what you guys mean when you say it just doesn't do it for you. I don't use it on a regular basis, but it's nice to break out once in a while. It is significantly darker than I expected, but it reminds me of Carolina Panthers blue (at least when used in certain pens) which I really like!

I like the shading but that's it.

Not too much love for this ink I guess. :( I've only tried half a dozen or so blue inks so I don't have much to compare to.

I liked the color and the shading. What I did not like was how dry it felt to write with. It also caused a flawless pen with other inks to hard-start if I set it down for more than a few hours.

I eventually settled on Toucan Bright Blue, which seems to flow better out of my pens.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
