Can Someone Please Recommend Me A Good Journal/notebook? I Prefer Leather Covered Ones.

Hi! First of all, I'm from Hungary so its important to me to find a site which is based in the EU (UK, Germany etc.) and sells that product.

I need one about A5 - B5 size, neither too big, nor too small, its better if its thinner rather than taller. Its also important to be fountain pen friendly ( But i still can't decide which fountain pen should i get for my money ( 70 - 80 gbp / 100 - 120 usd ), so if you suggest a few i will be glad! ( Right now im looking into the reviews of TWSBI 850-AL and Platinum Sai Limited Edition).

I want to start to write a journal, so i i not really need a notebook, more a journal, and i prefer leather cover.

Try Calepino in France . See my posting made today in Fountain pens and dip pens [First stop] forum. It may be of use to you in Hungary.

If you can find a supplier in the EU, I like the Markings by CR Gibson journals. They're bonded-leather covers, lined, A5 in size, and come in black, brown, or other colors. They only come in lined, though. If there's a Staples in the EU they should carry them.

Since you're Hungarian (my mother's side of the family is also Hungarian! Yay!), you might want to see this thread for local, beautiful journals made in Budapest.

As to pens, I second the recommendation for the TWSBI Diamond 580 but would also recommend the 580-AL. Great pen, smooth writer, feels the most refined of the pens I have (it's also the most expensive one I own). The M nib is smooth like butter, and I always eagerly await the day that it comes up in the rotation.

Welcom to the Pen Nuthouse and good luck! :)

Thanks for your help Miz Black Crow! :)

What a coincidence!! :) I'm glad to hear that, where do you live by the way? Which part of America? Yeah, I heard about Bomo Art, but thanks for the link, its useful :)

Do you like the M Nib? I can't really decide which nib size is best for me. At least, not until i tried them. F or M...

I just fell in love with Platinum's 3776 Century Sai Limited Edition.

Is the Diamond 580 tight and solid? I mean, i read a few comments about it and a few people telling that it tends to crack at some part.

Do you like your Safari by the way? Its really cheap, maybe i try it out before investing in a more expensive FP. My only problem with it is that its too lightweight for me. Maybe its not too bad, but i like if the pens have some weight.

Conrad,

If you like weight, the 580 is an amazing pen. I have an M nib and I enjoy it--it's incredibly smooth, feels like writing with butter. There's just a hint of spring to it, but not enough to be called "flexy". From everything I've heard, yes, some 580s crack, but less than previous models, and TWSBI (username Speedy here on FPN) is very quick to send replacement parts. (I've only owned mine a couple weeks, and so far no issues.)

The Safari.... I've owned two Safaris, a Vista, and four nibs between them, and for the most part I'm pretty unimpressed. They run pretty dry, and they're very lightweight.

As for Hungarian-ness: I'm New York City born and raised. My mother is of Hungarian descent and was born in Germany right after the war; her sister was born here, in California. My mom's family moved around a lot when she was a kid. She speaks a little Hungarian, I don't speak a word. :( My father's family is Welsh if you track it back far enough, with a lot of mixing (many generations in the US), but I don't speak any Welsh either.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
