What is the strangest nib you have ever seen? No fingerfeder nibs, please.

That is the weirdest nib I've seen by a mile! It reminds me of the duckfoot pistol.

Some inlaid nibs (e.g. the Pilot Elite) look like fingernails. I found them slightly disturbing at first.

Probably the strangest nib I know of is the Sailor Nagahara King Cobra Emperor. It's actually amazing to look at, and it can apparently write lines of a BBBBBB (6B!) width. It sounds absolutely amazing.

"Oh deer."

"Seymour's Triple Ruling Pen". But just what does one want such a thing for? Since the top two points seem about the same, it would not be to give a choice of three different widths so I assume all three are used together giving neat, parallel, evenly spaced lines.

But why?

That one is weirder than I could have nightmared.

I'm thinking it's for making DIY guide paper... before printers... even before mimeograph. Back when cursive was still taught in schools. ;)

That's a nib? Looks like a ghastly medieval weapon of some variety :yikes: .

Photos of all other weird nibs would be welcome! :D

Brause currently makes a similar pen that rules 5 evenly-spaced lines at once. It's meant for ruling music staffs. The one above looks even more specialized. Looking at it, I speculated that it might be for ruling vertical column lines in a ledger, and I guess that's it ("Let X=X", as Laurie Anderson said):

Dunno... I think I'd use a dropper.

i think it's supposed to be for something music-based. it's broken though, so its likely not very effective.

the shop that used to carry it doesn't have it anymore. i wonder if someone bought it.

this is a nib made to look like a face, or at least it looks like one. i dont see why the company would make this design other than for the face.

Best guess, I think the first nib posted is an accountants nib for ruling vertical lines in a ledger. The spaces being used for currency

Brilliant! I was thinking about ledgers, but I didn't think of using it vertically instead of horizontally. I'll bet you are right.

It would have to be a pretty small ledger...but it reminds me of what we take for granted. My dad was a composer, and he would take his arrangements to a copyist who'd make beautifully-written parts in ink on music paper (with a Music nib, probably). But now there's computer programs that can just print that stuff out.

I've seen several crafts go extinct because of computers.

A rastrum nib for drawing music staves:

it's so odd that this nib could be made to look reasonable, but the manufacturer decided to turn away from the looks of brause's musical ruling pen to this... knife thing.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
