Hello From Toronto

Hi to alll

I discovered this site completely by accident whilst looking for a silicone grease to fix my slow-closing toilet seat! I couldn't quite fathom from the message its use in fountain pens.

I have used fountain pens all my life, starting off in an English grammar school in the sixties. Now I teach Computer Engineering at the College level in Canada and people think I am somewhat anachronistic for using a fountain pen.

I have a couple of Watermans that I use every day, one for blue but I get the most use out of the other one, which always has red ink! Somewhere lurking in the drawer is a faithful old Shaeffer Whitespot that served me for over twenty years, and another Waterman that was retired prematurely when the shaft broke at the thread. Also in the museum drawer is a vintage Parker that belonged to my Dad, probably going back to the 1930s or 40s.

I am not knowledgeable enough to know the model names of these pens, the Watermans are all different designs, so I hope to learn more about them here, and maybe figure out how to repair the broken one.

Even though a lot of my feedback to students is now done online, my creeping artritis indicates that I will be using fountain pens for years to come!

One very useful benefit that I have found is the detection of fraud. I had a student once who forged my signature on a four lab reports to say that I had seen them, but he copied another student's signed lab reports with a Biro and made a very deep indentation in the paper, evidence enough to have him removed from the college!

regards,

Welcome! I discovered the FPN by accident too, searching for refills for a favourite gel pen. I hope you'll enjoy your stay here.

Welcome !

I love heirloom fountain pens. I have my father's Parker fountain pen.

This is a useful tool.

What do fountain pen people do with "toilet seat grease" ? :P

Usually our hobbies are pens and double/straight edge shaving and watches, but toilet seats would be a new one...

Thanks, Claudia!

I went today to Wonderpens to try and find a) a converter for Delores's Cross, and B) some Turquoise ink. They were very helpful, looking up the Parker Turquoise and matching it to one they had in SchreibeTinte. But no Cross converter. They said (as I knew) that Staples sells Cross, but they have not parts. The guy at Staples even told me to try Amazon.ca

When I got home, I tried the Cross again and, after some manipulation, got it to suck up some of your sample and then some ScreibeTinte, which Delores is playing with. It possibly needs a little of that Silicone Grease to seal it so it does not suck up air as I put it into the ink, I will try that!

To Torstar: I also have a hobby of double-edged razors, but after a few bad shaving wounds from what I suppose are counterfeit Wilkinson blades, I went out and bought myself a Braun electric at Christmas! Now my shaving mug can be a holder for pens!

Regarding the toilet seat, my search was for a highly viscous silicone grease that is used in the slow-closer mechanism, and one of the hits was from someone on this site stating that the same stuff was used to seal plungers so they don't suck air!

We had a great time at the Toronto Posse get-together last night, and now I know what to buy Delores for her birthday!

cheers,

Nigel

ve3, I can switch back and forth between a Feather in a Slant to my Braun 7 Series.

Both to me are the best out there for methods of shaving.

There's a few warnings about Wilkinsons...

Hi ve3id, and welcome to FPN

So you have a duo membership? Dolores and Nigel? Why not take a separate membership for each? Nothing against that...

Anyway, you seem to have been given a proper introduction by the Toronto Posse....

Enjoy your pens, and the forum

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
