Short Comparison-Moleskine Vs Miro Vs Strathmore 'marker' Paper

I'm looking for a couple different 'journals' .., but maybe not in the same light as others. I try and write in the journal nightly, just as an exercise, practice, for both drawing and penmanship. Usually the writing is mostly nonsense-... not necessarily reflecting on the day's progress.

The top image is a Pro Art spiral bound that I currently use. The paper is a bit rough, but was thick, so thought it wouldn't bleed through . .. but it does. The nice thing is, the pages are perforated, so if, on the off chance I draw or write something that's a 'keeper', I can pull it out and use / store it accordingly. I also like that it is spiral bound, so the book is always the same size ... the already written on pages, can just be flipped to the back. I don't know as I would like a normal journal that would just open up... especially if they don't lie flat. Maybe I'd get over it... :- The perf marks are nice though, but so far ... I haven't done anything good enough, worth keeping separately. ;-)

The next 2 are the front and back of a page I wrote on with 3 different pens, to show how much they might bleed through or be visible from the back. The pictures should be self explanatory, but one set is from a MIro Utility series small note-keeper, and the next two are from a similarly sized Moleskine. These I plan on using at work for daily 'field notes'.

Both of the little guys will be OK for work.

The bottom two are from a full size shet of Strathmore 'Marker' paper. Although it was pretty thin .. hit held up pretty well for the 'see/bleed through' test! I might make a journal book out of this stuff .. but still wont have the perfs on the pages.

Just my rambles and observations.

You might want to check out some of the "art" books at A.C. Moore or similar local shops and stores. Some of the paper, although not intentionally made for fountain pens is quite to our "wet inked friends"

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
