Home Made Dye Ink

thorn

Recommended Posts

Since we are having such cold weather and stuck inside, I made some purple ink from some dyes I got a couple of years ago.

Sanolin Turquoise Blue FBL (direct blue 199)

Sanolin Rhodamine (acid red 52)

glycerin

very small amount of Triton X-100 (flow and surfactant)

distilled water

Dowicil 75 (preservative)

No feathering or bleed through on cheap paper using a TWSBI Diamond 530 medium nib:

I do notice some bleed through on a cheap note pad.

It's a crying shame that this post never got any positive feedback or love that it deserves! That ink is GORGEOUS (if the colors are representing accurately), a bright purple with some POP! (And it sure looks nice in that TWSBI....)

I don't know why I missed this first time around...

I vaguely remember using Rhodamine as an histological dye a very long time ago (hint - paisley flairs were doing the rounds for the first time, but not on me).

A well behaved ink, with pizzazz, for a first effort. Well done.

Beautiful color. So are you selling it?

Never saw this post! That is a beautiful purple.

Thanks for the complements. I had not thought about selling, I just tinker around when I have the time.

You should consider selling your tinkerings, or at least samples.

Looks great.

Don't forget we have a dedicated team of ink testers to give you feedback and help you improve your product. We do not take bribes for good reviews, but we will take bottles and samples for testing. :)

  • 2 weeks later...

I have been out of town and the last couple of months and hadn't had time to mess with dyes. I might be at the DC pen show in August. I can bring some samples if anyone is going. One problem making larger amounts is getting small amounts (you don't need much) of Dowicil 75 (preservative) and even dyes. They like to sell things by the hundreds of pounds! These were samples I got from a couple of dye companies.

I would be interested; I'm a bit south of DC and plan to attend the show.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
