Help Repairing A Tiny Wahl...

MajesticPens

Recommended Posts

Hello!

I recently picked up a little gold filled, ring-topped Wahl pen, and I mean little. It measures up to about 3 inches long capped, 2 and 3/4 inches uncapped, and just a bit over 4 inches posted. I would love to try out its soft nib (the nib is size 0), but the sac is dried and the section is not coming off, and I do not want to break it. Also, what size would the sac be? Here are some images.

(the gap between the section and barrel was there when purchased)

Congratulations. Your pen looks like a very nice one.

I have/ have disassembled several of these. I collect Bantams heavily, and since they all have size 0 nibs, I semi-collect the gold-filled pens too.

The section on these is friction-fit. The section is HR and the barrel side is metal. Gentle heat should be all you need to get it apart.

This picture (sorry, cell phone shot) shows the distinction on the section side.

I don't have my repair gear nearby right now, but going from memory, the sac for these is either a 10 or a 12.

Don't feel bad. I'm old; I'm meh about most things.

Even though this is a slip-fit section, it is possible that the section has become slightly "grooved." I have seen instances where the metal barrel threads create slight ridges in the hard rubber section. I assume this is just from the pressure and time they have been mated together. This makes it harder to pull the section straight out.

While you ahve the section warmed, you might try more of a twisting/ unthreading motion than a pulling motion to remove the section.

It is likely that some significant time soaking in water- nib down, water just up to where the section is separating from the barrel- will help. It is difficult to know how much/ what kind of ink or adhesives are gumming up that section, holding it in place.

More than anything else, patience is the key ingredient.

Best Regards and best of luck,

greg

I sent mine to Danny Fudge http://www.thewritepen.net/

He does an excellent job and your pens will look even better than you can imagine upon return. His services are probably the lowest on the net and wait time is minimal. His services are just $20.00 and under and they are posted on his site so, there is no surprise. He is awesome.

With some patience you should get it open. Normally I use a hair dryer to heat it and wiggle the section out. With a newly bought 52 1/2 V I had really problems until I soaked it a day and used hot water in a cup to get it hot. Then I could wiggle the section out after some tries. Due to the metal overlay you should also not have a problem with water on the pen.

I just did a little Wahl, pretty much like what you have. I didn't have any issues, but I did notice the grooving in the section, as already mentioned. What I have been doing (experts correct me if I need to rethink this) is holding the section secure, and gently twisting the barrel, gripping it right on the threads. I want to say that I used a #14 sac on mine, but I should probably check my notes.

It's a wonderful little pen. Capped, it has a really nice feel and balance. Mine is one that's going to stay with me for a while. It's writes nice and smooth, but mine is exceptionally wet (still working on that).

I also had one and did not exercise patients and broke the section. So take your time.....Nice pen and good luck.

I have three of them currently all with different designs. One came to me with an already broken section. The other two I have been attempting to get open for almost two months with no luck. I am seriously considering sending them off. I have successfully repaired quite a few vintage pens but these two are my most stubborn...sigh...I wish you luck.

I've got one of those 3 1/2" Wahls also. At the top of the cap is engraved: "Wahl PE II ". What does that mean exactly ?

Either your pen is worn, or your eyeshight is fuzzy. Mine says "WAHL PEN" B)

You have to look closely at the N.

Wahl Eversharp sections are notoriously hard to remove, so much so that Pensbury Manor have produced a compound specifically for them: 'Pen-atrate' Potion No. 7'. If you're still stuck it might be worth a try?

No affiliation .....etc.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
