Dear FP'ians,

I am facing a unique problem with my diamine Pumpkin ink.

Issues is ,ink gets dry and appears like pwdery ,crystallized stuff on the nib and feed.

Is it safe to use this ink or going to hamper my FP?

Same issue like picture attached.

Regards

Dhiren

What conditions is the pen in for this to happen?

It certainly doesn't look good to me, and if it's happening while the pen is capped I would be fairly worried to the point if not using it. If it's being left out and doing this, then might just need to put the cap on more frequently.

How long has the ink been in the pen?

AFAIK, virtually all orange and orange-toned inks do this; it's the dye crystallizing on the nib and feed. Nothing to worry about; wipe/rinse it off and write on :)

Diamine Pumpkin is notorious for being on the verge of forming crystals. It appears to be a very saturated solution. It produces nib crud on some of my pens, but less so on my TWSBI nibs. As gross as it may look, it is not harmful. You could probably dilute it a bit with water, but I just ignore it or wipe it off with a tissue.

  • 2 years later...

Hi, I've just found this thread because I decided to rotate my bottle of Pumpkin today (after say, a year in the box). I stopped using it last year for this exact same reason, nib crud.

On taking the bottle out of the box I see that there is a layer of sediment on the bottom of the bottle, not unlike the way Chivor inks gold shimmer settles between uses.

A slight shake of the bottle has turned it into an orange 'Christmas Shaker' with particles galore and a dark misty ink. I'll give it an hour and see if it settles out to its normal crystal clear orangeness.

Can't help but worry though.

I might be old, but at least I got to see all the best Bands.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
