This was helpful! I am graduating college (Marshall University) in May and was looking for the "right" green to address my announcements with. After seeing the comparisons. I believe I like the Penman Emerald better than the Lierre Suavage that I was considering.

yes - but good luck finding some.

And before anyone harrasses me - mine is off limits!

Seriously though - it is hard to find and it is expensive when you find it. Your best chance is either on e-bay or put a WTB post out on the various forums. i apologize for being completely selfish and hording mine solely for my use. :D

:D I do not blame you in the least! I would hoard it too! I'm good at research, so if I find some I'll let you know where to get it...after I have got my own bottle of course

That is nice. Good luck, I hope that you have a good job waiting for you.

Have you tried PR Sherwood green or Mont blanc british racing green, both would be pretty close, the mb is slightly duller and the pr is bighter but lighter, maybe pr with a drop or two of black...

I no longer have the J. Herbin ink but you could probably add a little black ink to get close to Penman Emerald. Make sure it isn't a red-based black like WM though or you'll just get mud.

I stumbled on a Penman Emerald clone (in terms of color) Christmas '06. A touch of Noodler's WP Black in Diamine Woodland Green. Lierre Sauvage is slightly more yellow than Penman Emerald (to my eye) while Diamine Woodland Green is a pure medium green. My accidental mix was a dead ringer for Penman Emerald. Nothing I've tried has the "shimmer" of Penman but I was pleased to know that if I ever run out of Penman Emerald, I've got a back-up plan.

KCat,

What are the advantages of photographing ink reviews in natural light rather than just scanning them or photographing them with flash? I have read that different digital camera brands "read" colors differently, just like color film used to. Are you manipulating the .jpg file in order to correct the color?

Would it make a difference if it were a bright but overcast day?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
