Salutations From Norfolk, Virginia

Hello! I'm a novice calligrapher from Norfolk, Virginia. I used to practice calligraphy as a kid (from age 12-14), and recently decided to get back into it. I'm now 32 years old. I've been practicing on and off for about a month, using Pilot Parallels, standard Pilot Parallel ink cartridges, and working with just the basic Gothic exemplar from the Parallel Pen packaging, though I also have a variety of calligraphy textbooks I'm working through. Here is a sample of my work:

At the same time, I've become interested in fountain pens. Learning to use them was dead easy after getting used to writing with calligraphy pens. You can see my standard LAMY Safari there in the picture, and I very recently acquired a Pilot Vanishing Point Fermo as well. I have a bottle of Iroshizuku Shin-Kai and Iroshizuku Ina-Ho so far, lots of Doane, Leuchtturm, and Rhodia paper and journals, cleaning supplies... I'm going nuts over here.

I look forward to reading about people's work and experiences in the world of lettering, fine pens, fine inks, and fine papers, and sharing my own as I continue to improve over the next months and years.

Wow, thanks for the heads-up! I had no idea. I think I've always just assumed there probably weren't any dedicated stores around.

Hello Blaine, welcome to FPN

That is some nice Gothic lettering...

So I think our calligraphy forums will be your usual hangouts...

Enjoy

Thanks. My hand and arm were tired when I was writing those, so the letters were pretty wavy... yet my overall consistency and spacing tend to improve after a long practice session, too.

Sometimes my efforts look better on Monday than on Wednesday too, for some reason, though the improvement since I first began has been tremendous.

Lately there's been a lot of humidity here, and I don't even bother to practice those days because of the ink feathering and paper warping. Bit annoying, really.

  • 5 months later...

Speaking of Virginians - I'm from Albemarle County, and hit upon this thread searching for pen shops while on vacation in Sandbridge. I'm on my way to A Pen Lover's Paradise this morning :)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
